Hey Guys!

Okay so I am planning to purchase my first SLR Camera, I don't want something too technical BUT I want something that is going to take superb quality photos (REALLY SUPERB).

So I am thinking of trying out the Nikon D5100 with the standard 18-55mm lens - would this be a suitable choice?

Also if you guys have a good camera shop that sells at better prices could you help me out?

Thanks :D

Hey!
I'm almost sure no one else is going to tell you this, but you should really consider a sony SLT camera.

I recently bought an a35 and haven't looked back. Honestly as a first time SLR, get an SLT. The benefits are that you will be able to take amazing photos from the get go, and as you build up your confidence you can start playing with the settings while seeing what changes they make LIVE! An SLR cannot offer that.

If you need proof visit my fb page at http://fb.com/tysinphoto I haven't even been shooting for a year! Have a look at your options, but trust me, go have a physical look and feel at a Sony SLT, you won't regret it.

Canon 650D. I would like that touchscreen on my 60D.

EDIT: I don't have much experience with Nikon DSLRs but you cant go wrong with any of these 2 brands. I love my 60D though, bit of a Canon fanboy. :p

Dude, not to sound like a party pooper here, but seriously, nothing in your FB page provides any proof that a Sony should be considered?

If your on a bit of a budget even the 500D or 550D would suffice. it really depends. anything about the 500D is worth it though. I got the Cannon 1100D and its ok but I'm regretting it now as I don't have an external microphone capability (if i feel like doing some good video)

If your looking at doing some decent photos i would invest in an off camera strobe (flash) can make things more interesting. This will however push your budget up a little and it really depends on how much you are interested in photography. most of the Canon xxxD series have both full auto, semi auto and full manual modes which are nice when you want to learn how aperture, shutter speed and ISO make a difference to your photos.

Just my 2c

Good luck!

If you are looking to take "really superb" photos, it ultimately comes down to the lens you are using. I'm still using my canon 30D which I bought in 2006 and it is still treating me really well. Newer cameras might have more megapixels, touch screens etc.. but any camera with a great lens will have the potential for great photographs.

The lens is more important in some respects. Also u would recommend a canon - 500d or so

I agree on getting a good lens! but for starting out and learning the basics OP could use the kit lens until enough money has been made up to get something better.

I am thinking of getting the the Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm lens, just to start with.

Ok, but the D5200 has just been released. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might spot a heavily discounted D5100.
Remember: the D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000, and that still gives you class leading image quality.

I'm gonna do a slight hi-jack and ask what you guys think of:

Fuji Finepix S2995

For someone who is poor and interested, but not yet sure if they wanna make a big investment?
