First time potjie use

We had a potjie last night and a braai today with rooikranshout. With the potjie we had kluitjies and with the braai we had braaibroodjies.

Translate this into straight English.

Straight English you say?

All I saw was gibberish, that sounded absolutely delicious :D

When I bought my potjie about a decade ago, my helperhelper at the time advised to prepare it by boiling cabbage in it. Do not eat it after as it absorbs the metal taste and that. To clean I use dishwasher liquid, BUT ALWAYS coat it with a layer of cooking oil applied with a hand towel before storing. Pot is still perfect after many years

Sunflower oil turns rancid far quicker than olive oil in my experience.

A properly seasoned cast iron pot/pan/skillet/potjie shouldn't need a coat of anything when you store it. ;)

And store in a nice, clean, dry place. Very important!

After cleaning the pot thoroghly with steel wool.
Put it on the fire, 1/2 a bottle or more of cheap oil.
Cut a bag of onions into it.
put on the lit and cook it
use a spoon every now and then to coat the whole of the pots interior with oil
Onions will turn black with all the stuff they absorbe
After cooling down and discarding oil and onions
clean pot with warm water and salt
