I am in need of a fish pond pool pump. At a guess the pond is about 200 - 400 liters, not massive and is outdoor.

I look at builders warehouse this weekend and they had a few around the R700 mark.

There is one in the pond but doesn't work, is it worth attempting to have it repaired or buy a new one?

Can anyone recommend a place in JHB north, I am guessing pet shops should stock these types of pumps?

See if you can't just clean the gunk out of the one you have first.
Usually pretty easy to do and also usually the reason it's not working.

Ok cool will try that. I tried to take the screws out but damn they are so tight I couldn't get them loose.

But I will try again.

the bit on the front should come off (screw off), you should find a fan type thing (impeller?) inside it. Clean this out and clean out the piece it fits into.

usually get gunked up and stop the flow.

You do not need to get to the electric bits and doing so may damage seals rendering the pump useless.

you can have my old pool pump for a small price. Works fine - i changed cos i need a bigger one to run the solar panels...

Thanks Astro, I love this forum, the wealth of knowledge one can gain is priceless :p

I must admit I did see the seal and wondered if by opening it may mess it up.

That would be awesome Polly. Thanks. PM me how much you looking for and we can take it from there.

The price seems a little steep for that size to be honest. Although fish ponds might require more flow than the water features I'm accustomed to...

I just bought a 1200 litre per hour pump for my water fountain and it cost me R400.

For you 400 litre pond, you wouldnt need such a big one. I saw a 600litre per hour one for R200. Try Mica.

Cheers

Also thought it was a little steep considering. But then again I am finding Builders Warehouse to be overpriced. A few times now I have bought something there and see it elsewhere for cheaper.

Sweet, that sounds a bit more reasonable. Shot.

I actually bought my 1000l pump from Builders last month for R300.00.

I recall seeing a massive price difference though for more expensive pumps but I didn't bother with that path so can't explain it...

Try Mica.

The pumps at mica are more expensive than builders warehouse, I shopped around last month. Dont even bother going to a pet store!

Also got one of those from BW last month, the plastics on the previous one eventually became brittle and broke up (parts you disassemble for cleaning) due to sun/uv exposure over many years. They last a long time.

And don't bother with nurseries either - they were charging double what Builders had them going for...

R300 I can deal with. I will maybe try a different builders.

I had a hunch this may be the case.

I am also a bit of a chop, the thread title should read 'Fish pond pump' not 'Fish pond pool pump' :p
