Dear All,

After almost 12 months with our Fishbone it is time for a change. We currently have 2 x Meg ADSL lines and a 1 Meg Diginet Leased line.

Reasons for change:
1. No need for a contract that binds you to one Service provider.
2. More flexibility in cost reduction.

The idea is to run our AS400 to Europe and mail on the leased line. Preference given to AS400 Telnet sessions.

All other traffic over the two ADSL lines. Would I then use a load balancer for the other traffic?

Any people used the Technology Concepts line bonding product.

Hi there i use an Biguard 30 lite (billion router) that load balance the date across the 2 4mb lines i have so far i can't complain still seeking something to bond the lines without using (Expensive fishbond).

problem is bandwidth needs to bonded so if you use 2 x adsl lines they have different gateways

Only entity that can truly bond ADSL lines (without tunnels to a concentrator) is Telkom themselves ... that is until IP Stream becomes avaliable.

I don't know if you want to consider this router, but what about a Linux based router? You have much more flexibility and it's not "vendor locked" Setup a Linux firewall (choose your favorite distro), add 4 NIC's, 3 for the WAN & 1 for LAN, and then you can do a lot with it, line bonding, traffic segregation, more advanced stats, etc :)

Bonding will not be possible with this setup as each WAN port will have a different (NATed) IP address, best you can achieve is load balancing.

Bonding = a single IP transfer session can max multiple lines
Load-balancing = a single IP transfer session can only max 1 line, but multiple session can be distributed over the multiple lines

For a 15k to 20k budget a month what would be the optimal solution. Diginet Line is a must as it is business critical, or similar.

Hey BigVan99

I've just PM'd you an email with our thoughts and basic pricing. I'm expecting you to think it's a huge improvement and the best pricing around!

More discussions are needed and I'm happy to help you through it all or even just the options if you don't chose us.

Peter

Bonding needs to be done on both ends... Do you really need to have 8MB download speed? I have on one network 4x 4MB lines, and I am load balancing using Mikrotik Routerboard. But when balancing, ensure that each connection session remains on that router until it is dormant for 30 minutes. You can also use Routerboard to handle the shaping and routing through your diginet. A RB750 has 5 lan ports. Two for ADSL, one for Diginet and then two to use for your network. Holla if you need to programmed.

Any alternative to Leased line that is as stable.

Connectivity to Europe would Seacom or SAT3 be advisable? I see Seacom is about 1/3 cheaper?

All depends on whether your service provider has redundancy via SAT3 or SAFE.

@BigVan99 - How did Fishbone work out for you? Who was your service provider and what was the monthly cost? I am looking at this from a business perspective and most of the offers I see work like this:
  • Termed rental agreement - anywhere from 12-60 months
  • Most packages lock you in at capped usage with some excessively priced topups
  • ADSL access fee / line rental still applies

Based on the above, wouldn't it be cheaper to go with a leased line instead?

Magic,

To answer your question.

The fishbone you can only get Through Vox and they will hold you to a contract. Which i do not like. We signed a 12 month contract hence its up for renewal now.

Vox do offer you a tiered system and you can topup your usage close to the rate that you pay for your bundle.

The montly charge for the Fishbone device is R1750 excl VAt if I remember correctly.

ADSL and line rental does still apply you are correct.

More help please:

What is the going rate for 512k guaranteed international bandwidth and 1 Meg guaranteed international bandwidth respectively. This will exclude the R4,5k telkom line rental.

Would this then be unlimited or usage based?
