I've got some international guests coming this week and they want to go fishing. None of us can fly fish. We really just want to dip some lines with floaters into a dam/river somewhere whilst we drink overselves silly waiting for a passing catch. I have fond memories of the Rainbow trout farm from when I was a minnow myself. I see it has sadly closed down recently though. Can anyone suggest a similar day out within less than 100km of Johannesburg city limits? We would need to hire rods and bait as well as be able to do this outing on Thursday! Thanks for any replies!

Just don't do it Hartees, Vaal or any surround dam in JHB, likely to die from cholera or mine water poison. There are some well stocked private dams in the Potch area (although it's been years since I last went down that route - moved North 20 years ago). Next best bet is Witbank, East TVL direction, although may be a bit far. On Olifantsfontein road, there is a private dam - it is used as a ski joint, although on a Thursday it is quiet, no skiers - they may let you fish there. Good place for a piss up - nice treed surroundings, clean water - some fish! I used to take my friends & family very often there before it go turned into a commercial venture!

We usually go to Brookwood trout farm they're pretty close to JHB and you can rent rods there if you need to.

Thanks for the heads-up ... this place looks super cool.

Can you take in your own booze? I know footloose trout farm are not keen in allowing this anymore. They want you to order from their bar.
