As the title asks, is there a point to owning one of these devices?

It seems to me a smartphone does all the functions a fitness tracker can

Sleep as Android monitors sleep patters
Myfitnesspal monitors food intake
There are various apps that work as step counters.

....

What is the appeal?

When I was running a lot I used a polar watch. It gave me great stats for training etc.

I got Fitbits purely for discovery points. Advantage of the fitbits is the charge lasts a couple days to a week. My phone I have to charge a lot more often. And end up leaving it on my desk at times.

Not running with my phone... That being said, I don't like these crap fitness trackers. Just got myself the Suunto Ambit3 instead.

+1 rather use a phone than those ****ty fitness trackers. If you really want a good product invest in Garmin or Suunto etc.
