Five men were arrested after they were caught with copper cables weighing over 505kg at a scrapyard in Robertville, Florida, Gauteng police said on Saturday.
"It is believed that the cables are the property of Eskom and City Power. "Police will confirm the origin of the cables once the investigation is completed," said spokesman Warrant Officer Danie Mavimbela.
The men, aged between 37 and 53, were arrested on Friday. The owner of the scrapyard allegedly tried to bribe the officers with R30,000 cash, Mavimbela said.
They were all charged with possession of stolen property.
"The scrapyard owner faces an additional charge of bribery," Mavimbela said.
The men are expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court soon.
