At least five people were killed and seven wounded Wednesday in a suspected US drone strike on an alleged militant compound in north-western Pakistan, officials said.
The pre-dawn strike took place in a remote area in South Waziristan, one of seven volatile tribal regions along the Afghanistan border and a safe haven for al-Qaeda-linked Taliban rebels.
An intelligence official told dpa that the drone fired at least two missiles into a mud compound.
"The locals have pulled out five bodies and seven injured from the debris of the compound and shifted them to undisclosed location," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
He said the bodies were charred beyond recognition.
The casualties could not be independently confirmed.
Islamabad has criticized the US drone campaign in its tribal region, calling it a violation of its sovereignty and counter-productive as it inflames anti-US sentiment among locals.
Pakistan on Monday condemned a drone strike a day earlier in which four people were reportedly killed in the North Waziristan tribal region.
"Such unilateral attacks are in contravention of international law and counter-productive to the stability of the country ... and such attacks also set dangerous precedents in the inter-state relations," it said.
