Five years imprisonment for traffic officer

A Nelson Mandela Bay municipality traffic officer was found guilty of accepting a R400 bribe and sentenced to five years imprisonment yesterday.

The 44-year-old Vuyani Totoyi was found guilty of corruption in the Port Elizabeth Specialised Commercial Crimes Court after he unlawfully accepted a bribe in November 2014.

Court papers reveal that Totoyi, while on duty in the Despatch area, stopped Ruan van Tonder and told him he was unhappy with the tyres of his vehicle. Totoyi then asked that Van Tonder "make him smile" insinuating that he would accept a bribe.

Van Tonder then offered to pay him R400 which Totoyi accepted.

Van Tonder did not have any money on him and arranged a meeting place where he would later give the officer the cash.

After getting the R400 from his brother, Van Tonder first stopped at the Despatch police station to report the matter.

I gave that some thought, and don't think that the sentence is too harsh - the R400 is not a huge amount of money, but the crime bribery and corruption is a serious crime and doesn't change based on the monetary value.

In addition, he'd probably been doing this for ages before being caught.

I agree but 5 years seems harsh evens if the bribery amounts to thousands. I base this purely on how some get away with stealing Millions and face lesser evens no punishment. Fukkit, u can less for murder in South Africa.

Then on the flip side, I am happy they are showing intent to deal with corruption
