Hey!
I am an absolute CSS addict! Play it waaaaay too much! But if you are anything like me and trying to introduce new things like gungame, surfing and deathrun to non css fans you might have noticed that custom maps almost always have texture errors on them when you play on a non-steam copy.
Because i am the only one of my friends that have a legal copy of CSS i obviously don't complain, but my friends don't have enough motivation to buy a copy just for LAN....sooooo i have tried fixing the textures on my own by experimenting with a non-steam copy. i know there are texture updates for non-steam css out there but i don't have cap to download them especially after it failed twice when i tried.
So here is the instructions to fix the textures of non-steam css games.
*IMPORTANT*
You need an actual legit steam copy of css to fix it
*IMPORTANT*
1) What you will need is to download GCFScape.
2) Install and open GCFScape.
3) File --> Open --> ../Program Files/Steam/steamapps --> "source materials"
4) When open right-click on hl2 and extract to any temp folder you want
5) Exit GCFScape, now copy that newly extracted "hl2" folder into you non-steam css folder (you wil see it already contains such a folder)
*Just say merge/replace files when it prompts for it*
6) Viola!
If you get big red "ERROR" signs in some maps try extracting "source models" and "source sounds" as well.
If you noticed that CSS got a bit bulky, then you don't have to extract "source sounds" (its about 960MB i think), i couldn't notice any difference anyways.
You don't even have to extract "source models" it really depends on the map, usually never really affects your gameplay.
There you go! Test a custom map and you will see that all is well in the world of non-steam Counter-Strike Source once more!
Enjoy your LAN's!
