Just purchased start8 by stardock software and its awesome, its basically a win 8 themed start menu and allows you to disable everything that takes you to metro (metro start after login, shortcuts in corners and such)

So much better.

So what does it cost?

I forced myself to use Win8 as it was intended.
Took getting used to - and sucked initially, but now I am happy and honestly find the regular Win7 start menu a bit clunky.

Or save the cash and just follow this guide. To me it seems like a much quicker/easier option than having to purchase and then install software that uses extra resources.

Why not just keep Win7?

I don't think many will be given the choice of which version will be installed on OEM machines. All the guide does is show how to disable Metro, for those who would prefer the classic Start menu on Win8.

That method replaces Metro though. Start8 looks better, has more options and compliments the Windows 8 experience.

That start8 works wonderfully, $5 is basically nothing and really I dont see metro at all unless I actually want to now. Windows 8's metro as intended is for phones and tablets with sorta making it work with desktop.

using vistart and its works great :)

next question anybody know how to change the metro background I mean the actual image??

This doesn't seem to work with Win 8 Enterprise (RTM). The key is not even found in the registry.
This Start8 does seem to work rather nice though... Maybe I'll upgrade to Windows 8 after all.

I don't want to get rid of metro, I just wish they let me boot to the desktop first though.

+1

There's a lot more in Win8 that makes an upgrade worthwhile. Loving it.

I don't want to add code that messes with the plumbing. Start Menu add-ins are for old toppies who can't learn anything new.

Glad you qualified that old toppie part better :D
