Hey guys...

I alway hear you guys complaining that you want a fixed IP and not a static but what are the benifits of having your own (fixed) IP address?

The way i see it is that a static IP for me makes no difference

a bit of a nooob question and maybe i have completely mixed up which is which.

Thanks guys!

They are the same thing. You may be talking about the difference between a static IP and a dynamic IP.

A dynamic IP sucks and changes every 24 hours (or used to). It makes hosting services very hard, but simple things like dyndns do mostly get around them.

A static IP stays the same, so services are easy to run.

ahhhh sorry about that mistake:P

So for the end user say me who only browses the net, it doesnt really matter?

I do down load around a gig of music/videos a month BTW

it also helps to combat spam. if someone sends spam from their computers, their IP address would be added to block lists and the spam thus stopped. with the current scenario, the entire Telkom ADSL IP block has been blacklisted, so it is not possible to run a mail server from Telkom ADSL.

Some ISP's do provide static IP's, but this is mostly for business use.
