Fixed LTE vs 4G+ on phone

Hi guys,

I am interested in taking up a special on fixed LTE MTN supersonic. R999 uncapped.

I have an MTN contract and the max speed I get on my phone is about 18 to 20mbs.

Will I get the same experience on fixed LTE?

Apologies for the noob questions, just want to make sure before I put pen to paper on this.

FYI I currently have fibre at 20mbs ( about R750 a month) want a bump up in speed

If you have fibre and want a speed bump, just upgrade to 50mb line speed.. guaranteed that speed all the time if you have a good ISP.. no point faffing about with fixed LTE..
 
Definitely, you're lucky to have fibre as an alternative option! It's better to just upgrade your line if you're having minimal issues with it.

It's difficult to say what your results would be, Fixed typically runs a little slower than regular LTE but it all depends on location, the devices used to test, and tower congestion + scalability. Supersonic in this case also has terrible peering to international servers in most parts of the country, so that may fustrate you without using some workarounds, and you may not enjoy fluctuations in speed throughout the day.

50mbs on my current fibre provider is R1127 pm.

That's why the LTE option looks tempting, potentially a lot more the 100mbs at R999.


But I hear you regarding drops in speed and inconsistent performance.

Its a tough decision to make....Eish.
 
Is your phone Cat 6 or above because the only reason a router will be faster than your phone is if it has better carrier aggregation.

And all things being equal you can also get an antenna to boost speeds with a 4G router. I'm on MTN and get 50-80Mbps

Have no idea what Cat 6 is. It's a samsung Note 10

Who is your fibre provider..?
 
What do you need the absolute speed for?

For me, volume is more important.

What's the MTN FUP?

On Supersonic, none yet, but judging how they have a FUP on their other partners like WebAfrica (200GB @ 10mbps, 1mbps afterwards) ,
and Afrihost (full speed until 1TB, then 1mbps after),
a nasty one could be put in place soon, then I'll sadly have to cancel, but if they keep their word for the duration of two years, then super

Best to Google it, it's called carrier aggregation and can make a big speed difference versus not having it.

But MTN don't allow CAT 6 Routers on there Fixed LTE , hence you have to use one of there pre approved routers

What routers do they allow?

I thought all those fixed LTE options only allowed LTE-A aka Cat 6 and above routers on their network.

Its my believe that the fibre will be true uncapped. Lte will have some sort of cap.

With the advent of 5G that may change, unless you are streaming 4K day in day out I don't see how people chew through over 1TB a month.
