Fixing the SABC

Since 2007 there have been three boards and five CEOs at the SABC

We all know what the problem is. I wonder if there will be a day when broadcasting in SA will be free of political interference... It was not right before and it is not right now.

I say shut down the SABC and maybe (a big maybe) start again (maybe!).

Let the SABC die and deregulate the broadcast industry enough so competition creates quality. Why do we need a public broadcaster? The US doesn't have one, and they're doing fine. There's no real need for a public broadcaster other than being a voice for the government of the day. We should learn from our mistakes and let the propaganda supported SABC just die. Give more licenses to stations like E-tv and the likes. Give more licenses to local broadcasters.

There is no hope in hell to fix the public broadcaster! It is not a public broadcaster in the true sense of the word! Furthermore, there are too many people found with their hands in the cooky jar! Why can E-TV survive?

The SABC was one of the liberation movement’s first transformation projects.

I stopped reading at that point as it seems all their 'projects' end up in the same way. Personally, and frankly, my life would be better without the SABC.

It think Hayibo had a more appropriate take on the SABC.
The so-called broadcaster received a R1.4-billion bailout from the treasury in 2010, but this morning spokesman Cathode Phiri admitted that the money had all been spent on “pie, those big industrial-sized bags of Cheese Curls, and Creme Soda”.

Liquidate the damn company & buy permanent rights to BBC content with those billions.

That ****ty outfit is burning through billions of taxpayer money and yet can't manage to fill even 3 channels with watchable content. The only thing on them that has any merit whatsoever is the news & weather segment....and even that is tainted by political meddling.

Just shut down. Put that money (whats left) and monthly operating cost into broadband and voila! Maybe they can start on line broadcasting!

As simplistic as this sound, I believe there is some merit in it. The broadcasting in 11 official language issue can be solved this way. Imagine fiber cable to every house in the country, every one and their cousin can start their little TV station broadcasting in Klingon
