Flash Disk Rebooting System

Hi there.

I need some help.

I own an internet shop and on the odd occassion, when somebody inserts a flash disk, it reboots the system (sometimes from inserting the disk to sometimes when you call up the disk in the directory - my computer). It doesn't happen everytime and to every person - it just happens on the odd occassion but always with the same disk (same person) (if you can understand what I'm saying).

What could be the cause of this and how can I stop / prevent this from happening? I've tried just about everything.

Some people say it's caused by static on the flash disk. Can this be and if so, how do I stop it?

I would think it unlikely that it is static. If you say it is from the same person, then unless he rubs it vigorously against a dry sheep before sticking it in the USB slot, it is probably not static. If it is always the same USB stick from the same person, make sure to check what is on it. Some Flash drives ship with stupid apps pre-loaded on to them that your PC make take up personal issue with.

I've noticed a few times that it seems to be the same people (besides new customers coming in).

Once they've plugged it in and it reboots, I try another machine and the same thing happens - just to show them it's not my machines (but is it??)

Forgot to mention that I sometimes cannot even ge to view what's on it - the system has already rebooted just from inserting it ...

Then it is more than likely some strange pre-loaded software on there that your PC disagrees with. Once the PC has rebooted does it still cause issues, or can you view the contents of the disk?

Once the pc reboots, it goes about it's normal functions - without the flash disk. If it's inserted again - wham - REBOOT ... and so on ...

Found this:

I'd go to device manager and uninstall any USB root hubs. Then reboot and let windows detect them again when it starts up. This should replace any corrupted USB driver files.


Also just out of curiosity, what happens if you boot the computer with the flash memory attache

Haven't tried rebooting with the flash disk still inserted - interesting one !!
