Flash Player WTF

So I've got a clean XP SP3 in a VM with firefox installed. Off to grab Adobe Flash Player.

Slightly surprised that the adobe page lists it as 1.9mb. Disable checkbox for toolbar & AV that it wants to install (wtf?). Whatever. Turns out the 1.9mb is a downloader. Fine, so it starts downloading.

70mb later I starting to wonder wtf is going on. So I check whats doing the downloading (Adobe app). Check where its downloading from (akamai IP, which makes sense).

I know the flash player isn't 70mb so whatever its doing, its not downloading that. Cancel that & off to find a standalone installer. Adobe page has "Distribute flash"....which leads to an application form for a license.

Fine someone else must have the standalone (Thats what I used last time). Bunch of sites advertising the 1.9mb downloader as a "Complete Standalone Installer", some betas and ancient flash versions. No standalones.

Can't wait for HTML5 to become widespread. Flash is a PoS. Nonetheless for now there is no alternative, so...how the hell do I install flash (10.0.45.2)?

Thats the 1.9mb downloader. Same one as I was using above.

Also a downloader. This time the ActiveX version for internet explorer. No I've got flash in IE...but not Firefox. Its a start I guess.

All adobe products are now installed by the Adobe Download Manager. It is probably trying to install that... BUT... be careful it often throws in an additional download just before you click on OK... and one of them is mcafee antivirus. You might have accidentally clicked on OK... without noticing that it had been included in the download.

When you go to the Adobe download page... wait first before you click on OK... and let the page finish loading properly and make sure that it is not offering you anything else.... yahoo toolbar, gooble toolbar, macafee anti-virus, etc.

I made pretty sure first time round, but since thats the most plausible explanation I tried that again yesterday. After 300mb I killed it & went to bed.

Anyway, solved it today. Downloaded Chrome. If one accesses the page with that then it doesn't give any extra offer checkboxes. Couple of seconds later I had flash on FF and chrome, but not IE. Had to install the ActiveX version Abe linked to to fix that. Thanks.

Looks like my FF can't handle checkboxes.:wtf:

So...370mb later I've got flash.

+1 i also noticed the mcaffee installer.
maybe adobe can add some nice smilies with laughter - i don't see much difference between this and regular uninvited malware downloading.
go away mcaffee, we have ms security essentials. we don't need you anymore.
