Has anyone attempted this?

I found a simple diy NAND programmer that reads / writes to an SD card and takes commands from the USB ports.
Just wondered if anyone was in a similar boat to me where you have no menu, no bootmii etc and bricked your wii good and proper with a menu update.

I'm, going to attempt this soon when the PIC I ordered for the project arrives...
I will likely do this via Serial and not USB though (substitute the FT232RL with a Max232)
Hopefully I just need to get boot2 up and running and the rest can be done with the console. I plan to this with the nand on board - not in the mood to remove it and don't think it needs replacing.

Your comments?

Hmmmm... am I the only one attempting this or at least trying to attempt this? Has anyone else been in the position to have to do this?

Shot in the dark there!

THe Wii NAND is pretty basic and is easily bricked with updates or soft-modding. Nintendo's way of 'I told you so' when you have a system crash.

Good luck with the DIY project though :D

Yeah, a little in the dark, but on that forum discussion it seems three out of three have got it working with this little programmer. Next time I'll keep boot2 with bootmii. IMO what is a console if you can't hack it lol. It would hold no interest for me - my kids perhaps - but not me :D

The PIC 18xxxx arrived today, am going ahead this week or next and will post pics as it goes :)

Sweet!

Keep us updated.

Might have to invest in one for the odd full brick queries I get :D

Yeh - I was quoted R12k for a professional programmer... eish...
lets hope it works out, I'm sweating a little with the max232 mod although it should be simple, I'm no electronics buff... but i do have the 0's and 1's up there, so I am confident (or is that cocky)... time will tell :p
I just need to make sure my power supply is sorted for the sd card, nand and pic and I should be home dry.

Sorry, can't help you, but here's another site with a knowledgeable crowd - http://www.wiihacks.com/.

Next time make a backup of your NAND. :) There's a guide on this site.

Heh... I knew that one full well but laziness was my downfall :p
Well, made more work for myself but it keeps life interesting - I mean what's the point of expensive electronics if you don't have to hack every now and then - it's like a real live computer game. I have the final details on the power supply connections and should be able to report back soon.

Cool! I wish you plenty of unbrick success. :D

My time has been limited unfortunately. I am having some trouble communicating with the NAND. I have the max232 circuit working and can get a terminal session going and have the menu up, so the PIC and max232 are working well. Somewhere something is amiss with my connection to the NAND. I will potter with it more when I have time and post. There is no doubt this little home made programmer works (as per three users already) but it is probably alot easier to build the circuit properly and pop the nand into a tsop socked for the programming. I'll post again when there is more news.
