Our dog is starting to scratch! What's the best stuff to use for fleas and ticks? I've heard dogs can be allergic and have bad reactions to some products so how do I choose?
I use Fiprotec Spot-On in the winter; it's local, cheap and effective. Over the summer months I use K-9 Advantix which is a lot more expensive but offers protection against flies and mosquito's as well. It's potent stuff. I've never seen an adverse/allergic reaction from my dogs but it can happen. On the first and second application it's a good idea to have some Sunlight soap available so that if the dog starts panting and pacing or its tail gets a weird kink or just anything out of the ordinary you can scrub the application site and get it off. Then try a different product with a different active ingredient.
You can find out about the different ingredients and their efficacy here: link. There's also a handy product chart.
If you take your dog to a place with lots of ticks or if you live in a tick prone area the dog should pretty much always wear one of those preventik collars. If you find a tick on your dog it's a good idea to take it to the vet to see if it's got any parasites.
Sheep dip works fine. When i was little, my mum sprayed our dog with Dyroach to kill off heavy infestations. Dont try that tho...unless you want a nice smooth dog with no fur.
Also take in consideration that your dog might be allergic to grass.
Our dog was constantly scratching and sometimes even scratched until he was bleeding. We always thought it was ticks or fleas but after a series of Frontline treatments the vet diagnosed grass allergies. Now we apply some ointment from the vet and a Allergex every now and then if it gets out of hand again.
