Flies biting my dogs ears.

I can only assume that one of my neighbors have a compost heap or something because this year the flies are hectic. For the first time the flies are munching my labbies ears to bits.

I have tried various things to stop them, but its just not helping... his ears have raw patches that are just getting bigger.
I seem to remember something about a synthetic spray on skin that you use for burns, does anyone know where to get it? would it help? I asked the chickie at the pharmacy for it and she tried to sell me gauze in petrolium jelly.

Does anyone know a remedy that actually works?

Get citronella aqueous cream from your local Dischem. Rub around the wounds (not on them). Should keep flies off long enough to let the ears heal

Also maybe get one of those outdoor hanging fly traps (looks like a triangular plastic bag with a red top and hang it in the area where the lab spends most of his time. Will hopefully keep them away from the lab's ears. The fly trap stinks but it will solve your problem

had this same issue with my dog a good few years ago, visit your vet or pet supply store and they will definitely have a cream you can rub on the ears.

Zambuk salve is available in large and small green & white tins. It is safe to use on most animals ( I have used it on birds, cats, dogs and ducks, myself and children), it can be used to heal wounds and will keep flies away too. You can slather it on any wounds/bites/abrasions, a very safe healing balm that has been around for a long time, it works. (even when licked it has medicinal/healing properties and is safe)

The vet should have some oils and ointments you can try. If I recall correctly it should not be expensive. Had the same problem with one of my dogs a few years back.

Go to a horse shop, & buy some stuff called buzz-off, it comes in a big tub. You put that on your dog's ears & down their spine. It works wonders - my dogs ears were raw, poor things, & now they are fine

Brilliant stuff! It worked for my Labbies as well. It tastes awful, so I won't recommend it for cooking...

We've used Bio kill spray (Pet version) for our animals... Guess Zambuk could be a cheaper alternative

Red top fly traps really do work.

Drawback is that they stink. Big pong. So you'll want to put one up furthest from your house. The flies will go for the red top once it develops a lovely pong.

But be warned - you'll get when coming too close to one. Best to do, when having to discard one, is to do it when the wind will blow the pong away from you.
