Cape Town - One of the men accused of the assault of farm worker Flippie Engelbrecht has committed suicide, a report says.

According to the Rapport website, a friend of the family said Johnny Burger, the owner of Rietvallei Wine Estate, had shot himself on his farm in Robertson early on Tuesday.

Burger and farm manager Wilhelm (Dozi) Treurnicht were facing two charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm in connection with the assault of farm worker Flip Engelbrecht and his son, Flippie, five years ago.

Flippie, now 20, was left epileptic and blind. Later, he fell into a fire during a seizure and lost both his hands. Last month, he was fitted with a pair of prosthetic hands.

It is the State’s case that in 2008 Burger and Treurnicht beat Engelbrecht, who worked on the farm, and Flippie, then 15.

Police spokesman Andre Traut said on Tuesday: “This office can confirm that a death inquest case docket has been registered following the death of a 62-year-old man this morning at around 8.30 on his farm in Ashton.


“Circumstances indicate that the person was responsible for his own death. However, the matter will be investigated.


“The identity of the deceased will not be released at this stage,” Traut said. However it is reliably understood that the man was Burger.


The men have appeared in court on numerous occasions. On Wednesday last week at Ashton Magistrate’s Court, magistrate Francois van Deventer transferred the case to the Ashton Regional Court, postponing the matter to September 13. - IOL, Cape Argus

Dit wil voorkom asof die volgehoue veldtog teen Burger deur die plaaswerker se regsverteenwoordiger Carina Papenfus, tot die tragiese dood van Burger gelei het. Burger het voor sy dood gesê hy is die “slagoffer van ‘n smeerveldtog deur ‘n kwaadsteker met ‘n politieke agenda”.

Die polisie kon nie bevestig of Burger sy eie lewe geneem het nie. Rapport het egter reeds op sy webtuiste verklaar dat Burger selfmoord gepleeg het.

Jaco Krauwkam, Burger se prokureur, het veral die wyse waarop “doelgerigte” sosiale media-veldtogte gevoer is om Burger in die media te stigmatiseer en te verhoor asook om Rietvallei-wynlandgoed ekonomies te knak, uitgewys.

Krauwkam het vroeër gesê dit dui op ’n doelbewuste “beswadderingspoging” deur Engelbrecht se regsverteenwoordiger, Papenfus.

Papenfus het tydens Burger se onlangse hofverskyning die publiek aangehits met uitroepe wat die spanning en woede van die gemeenskap verder verhoog het terwyl hulle moes wag vir die twee mans om te verskyn.

Meer as 100 plaaswerkers en lede van die gemeenskap wat uit Oudtshoorn, Swellendam, Barrydale en Piketberg ingebus is, het vanaf 9:00 buite die hof saamgedrom om die Engelbrecht-gesin te ondersteun.

Burger en sy voorman Treurnicht het eers ná 11:00 opgedaag, weens ‘n ongesteldheid. Dit het daartoe aanleiding gegee dat woede-uitbarstings vanuit die gallery gehoor is.

Uitroepe van “Hoekom is jy so spesiaal? Wie dink jy is jy?” het weerklink toe die twee die hofsaal binnegekom het.

“Jy sê dat jy nie goed voel nie. Hoe dink jy voel hierdie kind en al die ander kinders wat jy aanrand,” het Carina Papenfus, sekretaris van die Freedom Trust, geskree.

Na ‘n kort verskyning, het landdros Francois van Deventer die saak uitgestel tot 13 September.

Toe die twee die beskuldigdebank verlaat, het ‘n lid van die gemeenskap geskree: “Druk hom vas!” Daar was ‘n stormloop vir die deur, en die polisie moes ‘n bontstaan om die twee te beskerm toe die skare skielik op hulle toesak.

Die manne het hul bakkie veilig bereik, maar die oproeriges het begin om die voertuig van kant tot kant te skud, terwyl hulle teen die vensters en enjinkap gehamer het.

Krete van “Brand hom!” is gehoor en die skare het begin klippe gooi toe die bakkie wegtrek. Die polisie moes van ‘n skokgranaat gebruikmaak om die woedende skare uiteen te jaag.

Krouwkam het in ’n aparte verklaring gesê dat Engelbrecht na die beste van sy kliënt se wete in goeie gesondheid was toe hy die plaas in 2008 verlaat het.

Hy was beslis nie blind nie en het albei sy hande gehad. Hy het bygevoeg dat die Engelbrecht-egpaar ernstige drankprobleme gehad het en dat dit die rede was waarom hulle gevra is om Rietvallei te verlaat.

Burger het toe gesê hy sal enige vervolging ten sterkste teenstaan en die “kwaadstokers” wat dié valse aantygings maak aan die kaak stel en “tot verantwoording bring”.

Engelbrecht beweer die twee mans het op 25 Januarie 2008 sy kop só hard teen ’n wyntenk gestamp dat hy daarna gereelde epileptiese aanvalle gekry het. Nadat ’n operasie om die drukking op sy brein te verlig skeefgeloop het, het hy blind geword. In September 2009 het hy sy hande so erg verbrand nadat hy ’n epileptiese aanval langs ’n vuur gehad het dat sy hande geamputeer moes word.

Engelbrecht eis vergoeding, asook sy hande en sig terug. “Daai boer het my hart baie seer gemaak.”

Papenfus, van die Freedom Trust, het intussen ’n Amerikaanse ontwerper, Ivan Owen, ingespan om duur prostetiese hande vir Engelbrecht te maak met die hulp van Richard van As.

Solomzi Ntlalombi, een van die betogers, het gesê dat hoewel hy nie vir Flippie ken nie, het hy gekom om hom te ondersteun .

“‘n Besering aan een is ‘n besering aan almal. Ons ondersteun hom as gevolg van die pyn wat hy gehad het.”

Engelbrecht het aanvanklik die bewerings van sy aanranding in die teenwoordigheid van Papenfus en twee senior lede van die Wes-Kaapse ANC, Pat Maran en Sanette Smit asook Shirley Davids van die “Mawabuye-grondregtebeweging” gedoen. Die foutiewe spelling verwys waarskynlik na die Mazibuye-grondregtebeweging.

Die omstrede Mazibuye-grondregtebeweging weier om ag te slaan op die toenemende kritiek uit linkse kringe oor sy anti-Indiese retoriek.

Die groep pleit ondermeer dat ook Indiese grond in KwaZulu-Natal herverdeel moet word onder swartes en dat Indiërs hul SEB-status moet verloor.

Because the site is about as pro-white and right-wing as The New Age is a government mouth piece. The 'facts' in the story are speculation and insinuative:

Mariette Adelaar, the packing manager on neighbouring farm Saratoga, has come forward to tell the Cape Argus, Rapport and eNCA that she knew for a fact that Flippie had suffered epilepsy from at least as far back as 2006 because she used to live next door to him and witnessed his seizures. The Freedom Trust has hinted that they believe Adelaar is either being paid or intimidated for this testimony. Papenfus stuck to her guns on Monday, telling the Cape Argus: “Medical reports with the prosecutor prove that he never suffered from epilepsy before the attack”.
There has as yet been no sign of Flippie’s records from his alleged stay at Tygerberg Hospital in January 2008.

However, the copy of the records of Worcester’s Pioneer School for the Visually Impaired in the Daily Maverick’s possession appears to show that in October 2009, when Flippie was applying to the school, his parents told the principal that he “op vreemde wyse blind geraak” (“became blind in a strange way”), apparently after a complication relating from an abscess on his cheek. His mother said that Flippie was taken to the Tygerberg Hospital and was blind upon release.
There is a Tygerberg Hospital record of a patient called Flip Engelbrecht, whose birthdate matches Flippie’s, having tests done at the Department of Radiology in November 2009 due to presenting with a “subdural empyema” – which a medical expert explained to the Daily Maverick is “roughly speaking, pus in between the skull and the brain”. The expert said she didn’t have enough information to give an opinion on whether the condition could have left him permanently blind.
It’s unclear, however, why the Tygerberg record would be dated November 2009, but the Worcester school’s testimony suggests that he was already blind and visiting the school in October 2009.

The fire incident is less ambiguous, however. Records from Worcester Hospital appear to show that a patient matching Flippie’s details was admitted on 19 August 2012 as a “blind epileptic patient who sustained 35% full thickness burns” after “he had a seizure and fell into an open fire”. On the 29th of August he underwent “bilateral hand amputations” and from there was transferred to the Burns Unit at Tygerberg Hospital.
This, then, suggests that the fire accident took place a full three years after Papenfus claims it did.

In the past few days the spotlight has fallen on Papenfus herself. On the Freedom Trust’s website, Papenfus is described as having “practiced as an attorney from 1997 until she made a family relocation to Hermanus during 2008”. What is not mentioned is that Papenfus was disbarred: she confirmed to the Cape Times on Monday that she had been struck from the roll. Papenfus and her husband Hendrik were also declared insolvent in 2008.

That's likely the case, and it's also quite obvious that it was rather the other way round. Papenfus coaching Flip and his mother. That's pretty evident from the video she made with them.

I see you are fed your information. The way information is presented differs greatly depending on the source. Those less inclined to question or think about what is presented leads them to believe everything they read. It's not about disputing, just know from experience what the undertones are and calling them.

No, it's called subject to investigation. You see, even at likely suicides they do some police work first.

I think once they rule suicide the case is closed. I've unfortunately known a few people who've taken their own lives, can't recall any police follow ups and I was quite close to two of them. Could be wrong though, trying to find a link.
