The back of my tv unit is a cesspool of wires and cleaning that area is a mission.

I want to create a diy tv unit 'floats' that not only looks better but addresses the dreaded cabling problem.

In addition to this I want to create a fixed bracket that mounts the tv at least 500cm away from the wall. I have yet to see something like this.

This will allow wires to be inserted and removed from the tv without moving it and gives it the effect of hovering in mid air.

I'm also looking at shortening the distance between tv and component by creating shelves next to the tv instead of one long tv stand below it which is what I currently have. This is also not a very common practice?

Here's some pics:

You want to mount your TV 5 Meters from the wall?

Some of the installs look very good and is a practical way to hide the wiring instead of having to grind into the wall.
If you do all your measurements correctly you can have it all cut and edged then just assemble it all seems like a nice project.

I just have one of those cable hidey thing and I painted it the same color to match my wall.

PVC Channels, double-sided tape and you're sorted. Like Batista said, easy enough to colour code to match your wall.

I was wondering how the hell that would work :p

Extended bracket enclosed in what looks look a floating shelve. It's been done before. It brings the tv to the front of the shelves. If the construction is sturdy enough, you can hide the HT sub behind the tv

Recently started look into this.

Was considering this... http://www.ode.co.za/products/product.aspx?category=9

My dad bought one of those units and when I arrived I was astounded how gorgeous it was. Its a beautiful unit and the backboard hides all the cables. Its not cheap but if you can afford it then do yourself a favour and buy one. It uses 4 brackets, each with 3 raw bolts in so it can easily handle your TV and won't send it crashing to the ground.
