I don't care about the history of floor crossing.
I want the peep I voted for to do my bidding, otherwise why in the heck did I have to vote for said peep?

Then you should carefully choose who it is you vote for then. :D

that's assuming you vote for a person - which nobody in South Africa actually does. Floor crossing and multi-party politics is a no-no.

As for the DA - they, just like everyone else in the country have this little constitutional right called "freedom of choice" - that choice includes the right to change their thoughts on any issue they please.

I agree

My feelings as well. When we voted it was for a person in a party that we chose. This person should not have the right to take my vote with him to another party.

My personal feeling is that the DA has no moral high ground to ask for the abolishment of floor crossing. It was dreamed up by them to facilitate their own needs at the time and now that they have done what they wanted to do, it must go? LOL

Not a DA dream I don't think. It is apparently accepted practice elsewhere in the world, just that in SA it has amounted to nothing more than horsetrading, as a judge recently put it. He also likened it to transfer season in the English premiership :D

Is it really accepted practice elsewhere? The wikipedia entry refers to the practice of crossing the floor for a single vote rather than a complete defection. The related entry: Party hopping refers to changing parties, such as during the establishment of a coalition govt. The key point for me is that ours seems to be the only system that includes a schedule for this. I have no problem with the occasonal politician having some kind of Damascus experience, but would prefer it if it were followed by a by-election. I have a big problem with a scheduled period for floor-crossing, and with the 10% rule that means larger parties will never lose at floor crossing.
