Hey

Does anybody where someone can still get flu shots in Pretoria or Johannesburg area if at all possible?

Thanks in advance
Vero

Shouldn't be necessary unless you are very old or have a compromised immune system imo.

I wouldn't rely on dischem though for info as to the national availability. If there were really none available then it would have been in the news.

One of the girls at work mentioned this morning that they are expecting a particular serious strain of swine flu this winter. I wanted to take my child for the shot. Is there any reason why it is not available? Especially in light of the above?

I suffer from Asthma and my doctor said I must get some, but he also said that AFTER April the stock will sold out.

Every pharmacy I have tried so far is out of stock

Panic via hearsay.

Flu vaccine shortage
We received a number of calls the other day from people trying to get vaccinated against the seasonal flu. The issue of shortage of flu vaccines relates to the private sector as they have been unable to secure their normal order numbers as National Health have ordered an increased amount for the public health service, including frontline health care workers. State hospitals will prioritise pregnant women, children under 15 with HIV/AIDS, and those with serious heart and lung problems. If you cannot get vaccinated, Dr Ivan Bromfield says that the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is by washing hands frequently, not touching your nose or eyes unnecessarily, to contain your coughs and sneezes and to be wary of things that other people will touch - like elevator buttons.

My company arranged for someone to come over and vaccinate the staff. I cant stand needles, but it was kinda painless. I felt a bit of pain after about 30 minutes.

Anyways, three days ago I started coughing and I hardly cough, sneezing is what I do most when I got a cold. It looks like the shot did not work for me. I only took the shot because I am scared to death of that bird flu strain. :o

AFAIK these shots actually infect you to help boost the immune system so it's natural to get a bit sick after being vaccinated.

I see. I also forgot to ask if it would protect me from the bird flu strain since there is not a lot of that drug around. Why the double standards, its always; "innocent women and children". what about innocent men, are we that disposable? :(

ok here's what i found out just yesterday. my medical aid send an automatic authorisation for my 1 child to have the flu vaccination each year as she is chronic asthmatic. so i went off to the docs yesterday only to be told that they cannot get the flu vaccine it's in shortage. i went to my chemist and was also told this.
i then phoned the medical aid and they informed me that because of the world cup the majority of the vaccines were distributed to the provincial hospitals and a minimal supply was given out privately. so i told them that is ridiculous as they knew my child needed this each year and how was i going to get my hands on the vaccine now.
so they gave me names of 3 provincial hospitals in my area. i phoned the 1 and they told me that the vaccine that was distributed was the H1N1 3 in 1 booster and not the normal flu vaccine that everyone is talking about. this woman was very kind and helpful and said she would look in her stock on monday as my case is dire and she would see if they had the normal flu vaccine to help me. i even offered to pay for it. she told me i didn't have to pay which i thought was really nice of them.
these were all issued to the provincial hospitals for the upcoming world cup. so in other words what the health organisation in this country is saying is to hell with those who are in need of them. that is disgusting to say the least.

Our Dr told us to get the vaccine ASAP 1st week of April. Dischem ran out of stock middle of March and are not expecting any more stock. No local pharmacies have, neither do Dr's.

What's the story? Government bought ALL the vaccines and like mentioned above, is being held in hospitals.

So I decided to call the hospitals who interrogated me as to who I was and why was I making the enquiry. I have 2 kids was my response. Their response is only the kids admitted to the hospital will receive the vaccine. So I then asked if I can have my children admitted (at my expense) and the answer was a flat NO.

So I give up, my biggest worry is my son who is only a year old has not had much opportunity to build up an immune system and is at a creche where disease spreads like wildfire. If I could I would take him out of school during the world cup or the whole of winter but that's just crazy and not financially viable!

Thanks to SA government for not making protective measures available to the general public, especially the minority who make the largest contribution to tax.. So, underpriveleged, supported people will receive the care we pay for, and when we offer to pay for ourselves their's no stock... Something tells me my family will be leap frogging out of SA!
