Hoping someone in Gauteng can take a passport to Sydney ?
Sonny boy coming to visit for our summer but never buys return tickets. He has EU passport but we are worried about our new rules and want to give him his SA one just in case....

In any case, I'm flying to Australia the 2nd week in August. Will be in Melbourne and Sydney until end August.

Why not send it via courier?

Immigration is going to be suspicious if they check and don't see an exit stamp when he was leaving SA.

You might find yourself on the wrong side of the law if you are searched going through customs in Australia and you have another person's passport on you. You should rather courier it.

Not necessarily, for all they know he could have got the passport from the South African embassy in Australia.

No, they all have "Dept of Home Affairs" as the place of issue.

If the guy at the immigration desk was competent enough they would have spotted the missing visa from Australia, also pick up on the issue date and any discrepancy in the number of entry and exit stamps. Of course being SA, they will probably just stamp and let you go through.

It's none of their business what stamps you do or do not have in your passport. Their only concern is that you have a valid South African passport to enter South Africa.

If you have dual citizenship i.e. two passports, you have to use your SA passport to leave and enter the country.

SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT ACT, 2004 (ACT NO. 17 OF 2004)

The Amendment Act repealed section 9 of the South African Citizenship Act, 1995 as of 15th September 2004, which regulated the use of the citizenship or nationality of another country by a South African dual citizen.

This inter alia means that the system of exemption/letters of permission to make use of a foreign passport has now been terminated. No further applications in this regard may therefore be processed.

The repealed section 9 has been replaced with a section as specified in the new section 26B. Section 26B reads as follows:

“ A major citizen who-

1. enters the Republic or departs from the Republic making use of the passport of another country; or
2. while in the Republic, makes use of his or her citizenship or nationality of another country in order to gain an advantage or avoid a responsibility or duty,
3. is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding 12 months”.

It's none of their business what stamps you do or do not have in your passport. Their only concern is that you have a valid South African passport to enter South Africa.

If thats their only concern, why even bother with immigration control. Heck, as long as you have a hard cover book with some empty pages and a barcode and your face on it you can just walk right in.

Been visiting here 5 times last 10 years without showing SA book. Just worried about you know whos new powers at ORT.
