Cape Town - Low-cost carrier FlySafair has launched another value added service that will change the way its passengers fly: Priority Boarding.

People looking to fly from Cape Town or Johannesburg after the 21st of October will now have the option to add Priority Boarding to their bookings for a R50 premium.

“The benefit is eroded if there are too many people with Priority Boarding, so we will limit the number of priority boarders per flight,” says Kirby Gordon, Vice President of Sales and Distribution at FlySafair.

The carrier says the service was born out of customer feedback. “We make it our business to keep close to our passengers and maintain an open dialogue. Priority Boarding has been requested in customer feedback time and again, so it made sense to implement it,” adds Gordon.

Since launching a year ago, FlySafair has made several waves in domestic aviation.

The airline’s consistently low fares have seen domestic travel prices drop by as much as 39 percent on some routes.

It maintains the best on-time performance in the country, with 95 percent of departures happening within ACSA’s required 15-minute grace period – an effort that has the industry hoping to improve general performance in the last year.

It was the first airline in South Africa to introduce an “unbundled fare” that allows passengers to choose their own extras, like checked-in luggage.

The airline reports that less than half of passengers actually take a bag, estimating that it has saved the public more than R51-million in luggage fees. Recent reports indicate that other carriers will soon follow suit.

“Competition is tough at the moment,” admits Gordon. “We’ve brought prices down as low as they can go for the moment, so now it’s time to focus on thrilling our passengers even more.”

This is BS. I refuse to use flysafair.

This business model is beginning to look more & more like ryanair etc.

Flysafair is trying to milk the customer as much as possible and is hoping the customer pays for extras.

Mango is seldom pricier than safair and Mango doesnt charge you extra for luggage.

Flysafair's business model actually makes me dislike them.

They justify the added costs by "offering lower prices".

Flysafair has to maintain a minimum price per ticket to remain profitable and cover overheads.

There is a limit to how cheap their tickets can be and I find mango to be priced similarly without extra charges.

Well I suppose we are paying for Mango with our taxes. I'll give you that is through SAA .

Never understood this priority boarding thing. Why would I want to climb into the tin can first only to spend more time in a confined space with uncomfortable seats? I'll chill in the coffee shop an extra 10 minutes, be one of the last to board and when I do the plane takes off shortly after.

Well maybe in this case, but globally the model does work. e.g. the hand-luggage only tickets genuinely are cheaper in Europe.

I have been using Safair since their inception to various destinations.
I have found their ticket prices are inexpensive and their service tops.
I used to use Mango, but have ceased using them because their fees are still consistently higher.
Safair attracts mainly business travelers. Most do not stow suitcases below deck, choosing small cases that fit in the hand luggage bins. (Overnight bags)
I'm lead to believe that Safair are modernizing their fleet and purchasing 737-800 NG models, and installing brand new interiors, raising their standards and reducing their operating costs.

If it was not for Safair's entry into the market, and it's rapid expansion into new routes, other carriers would have continued to collude with high ticket prices. The only reason Mango tickets have dropped in price is because of new entrants, Safair and Skywise.

A Safair supporter I'll remain!

At present their aircraft are pretty ancient.

Their fake R1 ticket fiasco didn't help their image either.

Well you want to avoid the

- Tantie that takes one step and then checks her board pass to confirm that this is still not her row or

- the one that brought 5 plastic bags and filled up all the over head space near you.

Just getting away from some people is worth it.

Priotiry boarding for a two hour flight?

Unless company pays it's a waste of money. Tantie might be a priority boarding passenger too.

What actually happened with those R1 tickets?
What was the final cost to fly if you bought one of the R1 tickets?

Depends. If you're flying with just carry-on, it's R1. If you want to add up to 20kg check-in, it's an extra R150 per way.

The actual problem was that people were on the site from the morning til around 1am, and most didn't manage to snag any flights, while some got more than a few.

I was up at 3am and bought flights for a few trips no problem.

We want to know how they sold 10,000 flights when the website was down. That's the question.

Dunno how many they sold. Just know I got a few, so it wasn't like it was a complete scam.

Quite a few people on mybb got tickets. Considering that such a small fraction of the online SA population are forumites, I think it's conceivable that they did sell a few thousand tickets.
