I have an older phone (Sony Xperia E5) and need the last version of the FNB app that worked with Android 6.0. I factory reset it without first exporting the APK and the current Play Store version can't install on my phone. I've asked FNB, but they were not willing to supply an older version.

Yes, I know it's probably time for a newer phone, but I only use the basic functions and it seems like a waste to retire it just because of this. Alos checked for newer custom ROMs but couldn't find one and often certain features don't work properly with those.

Doubt any old version will allow you to log in. Android 6 is a security nightmare at this point.
The one I had installed before resetting still worked. It probably would have stopped functioning at some point, according to the lady from FNB. Just couldn't use NFC due to rooting the phone, which I successfully undid with the reset, lol.

At least I have a Samsung tablet (running Lineage OS) with a working version of the app, so I can approve transactions. Not very practical to take with me to the shop though and I'm having difficulty verifying the device.

Downloaded the oldest one they had and scanned it w VirusTotal and Metadefender. One of them picked up adware, so I'm very hesitant to install it on my phone.

I found another older APK online, that didn't raise any flags, but it shows the 'it's time to update' screen when starting.

Looks like I'm getting a phone upgrade.

False positive most likely.

I’d have to agree, for 2 weeks the app stopped working until I whitelisted some of FNBs external network requests on my firewall.

It also includes FNB created spyware, well it had, not sure if it’s still there.

why take a chance with something as serious as your banking app? Just get a new but crap phone.

Yup, seems quite risky. Would have been nice if FNB could give me the official APK. I dislike this kind of obsolescence.

I'm probably going to get the cheapest phone that has NFC because I want to use tap to pay. The Galaxy A23 / 24 most likely, which should then last me a few years, or until FNB decides I need a newer phone :P

Can you really call it obsolescence when trying to use software that was released over 8 years ago, Android has a 2 year support cycle, the devices, especially at the cheaper end had a support if you where lucky. Only within the last 2-3 years did manufacturers begging offering 1-4 major releases and generally 1 additional year of security updates beyond that.

In software anything past 3 years, or basically the second security support ends is considered dangerous. At this stage Android 6 is at best a security nightmare.

Bought another phone (Galaxy A32) that has Android 13 on it and might get 14. It's nice to have it working smoothly and to have the apps I want working (FNB, Garmin, etc.) The jump from Android 6 to 13 wasn't as drastic as I expected. The phone should be ok for the next 2 to 3 years.

btw, I'm advertising a brand new sealed A24 on carbonite for 3k as I decide to rather keep the A32.

Interesting I was gonna suggest the A24, got it for my mum and I am impressed by that screen every time I see it

I like where the fingerprint sensor is for the A32 (under display) and more MP for the camera. Very similar display and resolution. The A24 will get more Android updates though.

btw, I've read a suggestion to turn off ram plus as it might wear the NAND storage out faster. And with these Amoled screens a darker background and disabling always on is better to prevent burn-in

Service menu to test screen and other functions: Dial *#0*#

@ronz91 The A32 has a FM Radio, which I don't think the A24 or most of the newer Samsung phones have.

Something I miss from the old phone is the notification led.
