I was in Menlyn Mall this afternoon and needed to withdrawn some cash. All of the ATMs in the mall indicated that they're "Offline".

So moved to another in the area (another mall) and saw this:

And then tried another at a petrol station and saw this:

Anybody know something?

Did you hack them? R50 000 and I won't report you.

the fees are so much cheaper to draw AND deposit at pick n pay . to deposit 10k at FNB is R170 . at pick n pay its R40 . withdrawals are ( i think ) R2

Sheesh, so much useful information.

I have a contractor who is giving me a substantial discount if I pay cash. Probably dodging taxes, but hey as far as I know cash is still legal tender, and his business is his business. This is the first time I've needed cash in years.

I'm able to withdraw up to R8,000 a month free on FNB. I was planning withdrawing the rest from a PnP or wherever I can do "cash at till". But it is actually still somewhat nicer to pop into an ATM where nobody is standing compared to a busy PnP, and this is a Sunday afternoon. Some places are closed.

I can't "move to a better bank" before the guy comes.

FNB does their weekly maintenance on a Sunday. Very irritating. You never know what won't work on a Sunday. So their ATMs being off (or resetting after an update that was maybe pushed), fits. Its either that, or the cash van was at the mall and was busy re-stocking the cash.

Thanks this fits closer with what I was seeing:
- atms off at three different locations (Menlyn mall + 2 other locations)
- I know my FNB online banking is useless on Sunday evening due to maintenance; just didn't think it would happen this early in the day. Most of Menlyn were still fully open at 14:00. I checked the other ATMs later in the afternoon.
