Former MTN and Telkom spokeswoman. Paid to spread the corporate message. Please tell me how a deposit-only ATM, not a cash-issuing ATM, "Enhances customer experience"?

My understanding of current ADT functionality is that the machines act as safes, you deposit your money in a bag or envelope, and there is no recycling internally or dispensing locally from the machines as they do not support the functionality which makes the statement "Moreover, the increased deposit-taking facilities support effective cash recycling within local markets and reduce the bank’s reliance on Cash-in-Transit services.” false as well. Traditional ADT devices would in fact increase the reliance on cash in transit services and would increase the need for ATM's to dispense cash.

Some of us just use an ATM to deposit cash. If there's a dedicated ATM for that the queue should move faster.

Adt is on the right. Dispenser is on the left. Whole thing is trying to sound innovative while it's been around for ages.

was about to say: "what year is it?!?"

this stuff is ancient, nothing remotely new about it, the last interesting development I knew of on this front was back in 2012 when Capitec played around with cash recycling ATMs:

that's most setups yes, although see above, Capitec has had cash recycling ATMs since 2012 where the ATM does indeed dispense the same cash as someone else deposited

Essentially they don't want normal people engaging with their staff as real customer service has been deemed too costly.

This started with them placing uniformed enforcers at the entrances of all branches to stop people going in and forcing them to use their crappy app and ATMs. Online service has also been deliberately decayed into being largely worthless.

Banks are doing card replacement at atms and kiosks now. Coin depositors at absa and capitec.

They pushing onto other stuff trying to being down the staff compliment at the branches

The branch staff have to now show the customer how to use the app, essentially working themselves out of a job

This bank already carries vast swathes of people who have no real career prospects.

Many of the people getting turned away are low income and don't have full grasp of language or technology. Being turned away by some lanyard tit has to smart when you're paying account fees and simply want to deposit some money and not get robbed.

The last time I had to go into a branch, 3 separate people tried to sell me additional FNB products.

Horrid company.

I don't get why anyone would want to even go to a bank branch. I think last time I was at a branch was some time in 2020 where there was no getting around a requirement for original documents for a deceased estate account to be opened. (I could've couriered but the branch was less than 3km's from my spot and it was a good excuse to get out and about a bit)
Everything else I've needed to do since then could be handled via a call, email or a banking app

Nice, haven't seen one to be honest, but if it does now then it makes sense. (Shows you when last I used an ATM)

I've only seen one, ever, I was on the project for the provider who made it possible for Capitec so I had one of those next to my desk for some months many years ago ... quite a pain to move around as it weighs more than a ton with the safe and everything 🤣

I know they launched at least one of them at their own HQ / campus in Stellenbosch, not sure if they ever rolled it out in public

you feed it cash notes and it has a bunch of tests to tell fake money from real money, even had a coin hopper i.e. you could chuck a handful of coins into it to deposit and it would separate them into different slots based on weight

it was quite an ambitious project where Capitec was aiming to significantly cut costs in refilling ATMs with cash, they were even talking of using your location to prompt you via the banking app if you're in close proximity to an ATM running low on cash to offer an incentive should you deposit there

many interesting ideas, I fear it all came to naught, I should probably try the deposit function at a Capitec ATM one day to see how it works and if cash recycling might be supported
