Just a heads up -

So I have multiple accounts within my FNB accounts.

My day to day account with basically just the amount of money I need linked to my cards.
A savings account with, well a fair chunk of savings, and not linked to cards - salary gets paid into that account and I transfer from that to my day to day account as needed.

A few days ago, for the first time in my life, I downloaded the pdf statement of the savings account - and behold it's in Afrikaans for some unknown reason - where all other statements are in English.

I contacted FNB, my private banker, and asked if I can have it in English, they said they can only give me an English one when the next quarterly statements come out.... that's in April.

I kinda need it on Tuesday, in English, for a visa application, so now I assume the whole thing is in jeopardy.

Hired a translator to translate it.

I'm confused why it needs to be in English.

Aren't the numbers the same? Isn't your name the same?

Typical bureaucracy.

The thing about visa applications is you always have to assume the whole thing is in jeopardy.

So take that statement and have it professionally translated into English, French and Spanish just to be sure, have it notarised, diarised, stamped, embossed, laminated and framed.

Then hand deliver it to the ambassador.

How the hell does a bank statement be in Afrikaans. Do the names of the stores you swiped at get translated?

For example: “Starbucks…………..R49.99” gets translated to “ Sterbokkies ………….R49.99” ?

It took me a very, very long time to get my address changed on my FNB bank statements. My statements have always been in English, even since I was a kid. I have never had these issues with either ABSA or FNB, but I would suggest that you contact your private banker to provide a bank letter to accommodate your bank statements to make your VISA application.

What translator did you use?

Accurate...

Ended up getting an official translator.

Yeap got that visa letter.

It's shocking that they have so little control over statements.

With other banks, you can often generate a new, up to date one on the fly, or at minimum every 24 hours, with a range of your choice.

I literally have to attach multiple PDF statements to make up for the 6 months required statement... where it could've been one PDF going back 6 months, as simple as that.

Definitely changing banks after this episode.

Which other banks?

I had a similar problem with FNB and my UK visa application in 2019. No one could help me. I found a bit of a workaround that was sufficient:

Go to an FNB ATM and print "interim statements". They will be in English.
They will also include a digital stamp with a URL for verification.

The URL contains a neat looking English statement.

Was good enough for UKVI.
