FNB requires for some transactions to have your location settings ON. The IT manager of FNB had been asked elsewhere for the reason. His reply was: It's safer. (park that thought).

I forget to switch location settings on often, which throws be back quite a bit in the menu when banking via the app. Okay, that is my problem.

BUT: Am I the only one who gets the irony, that irrespective of my location, the app works with location settings ON?
That's the same as signing the honorary book to my storage place with Donald Duck.

It's not going to work when you try to login via Timbaktu or Antartica.

It's for auditing/security purposes.

If you ever have to query the transaction, they have more information to provide you with.

"On such a date and time in such a place, you did XYZ".

Probably also to establish usage patterns and allow their 'security team' / systems to judge the dodginess factor of transactions. i.e. "This is not one of their usual places to transact", "They always do big transfers from here".

Okay, r4ndom, makes sense. But at that very login moment there is no added security.
If my login credentials get stolen, the perp can access from Cape Town, or Bela Bela, or Paris... (I tried EU)

bear in mind one can set fake locations, so I doubt how useful location must be on actually is.
also Cell location is Permanently on, so there's that.

Totally agreed, though there exist anti-spoofing methods.

Remember the FNB app has a lot of access to your phone's capabilities.

Wouldn't be surprised if they secretly took a picture of you every time you transact. (jokes, but also who knows)

It's all about gathering as much information as possible. Even if it's unreliable in 1% of the cases, the 99% would warrant it.

thats why I block it on Magisk and turn its photo capabilities off all the time,
also watch carefully for that green icon showing what FNB is accessing at that point in time.
