FNB discontinues Android tap-to-pay facility

What is this with Google Pay , I tap with the watch with FNB card , then the machine ask ZAR or US , never had it before

Just tap with your card, even better, tap with your whole wallet if you only have one bank card.
FNB only wants you to tap your phone for ebucks. They basically do not allow you to use your card, if you want to earn maximum ebucks.

Absa said digital wallets like Google Wallet offer more safety than physical wallets.

“Security and privacy are built into every part of Google Wallet to keep all your essentials protected. It is protected with advanced security features from Android phones, like 2-step verification, Find My Phone, and more,” the bank said.
Several quotes in the article from spokespersons (for several banks) that all seem to have a woody for Google Pay and Google Wallet.

@mylesillidge How about a follow-up article with quotes from those same spokespersons on how they plan to resolve any disputed payments in a timely manor?

More specifically, how many days/weeks/months/years will a refund from a merchant take to be processed?

My experience with trying to redeem a simple Google voucher (that I bought) for use with Google Play / Google Wallet, took 4 months of denials and dispute resolution rejections from Google, before it was eventually resolved.

That one very bad experience was enough to put me off relying on Google for anything to do with money.

Fnb just wiped every single Huawei phone off the planet.

Us Huawei phone users now have no tap to pay feature.
Sideload.

What do you mean?
There are apps where you can dual boot into another OS instance, either a different rooted one or the same one, or run a second instance within the current one.

Slightly off topic but my question here is what is the best way to protect yourself from a situation where you are hijacked and forced to give up your cards and unlock your phone, essentially giving the criminals unlimited access to your money.
Insurance.

Hide your main accounts from the app and don't carry cards. Have two separate banking cards loaded on your phone Ala Apple Pay / Google Wallet

Give them the pin to the phone and the most they'll do is eWallet to the max amount for the day and EFT's from the account you've shown on the app.

Or just delete your main banking app off the phone and have a Tyme one lol

What we actually need is a "under duress" security option.

So if you enter a particular pin or use a particular fingerprint, the phone unlocks but certain apps are hidden from home, apps, search, everywhere. Nobody would be the wiser that the phone is actually in a "under duress" mode.

*FNB only wants you to use the VCC.

You could still tap your phone but use the physical CC. Doing that won't earn you max eBucks.

Or a girlfriend unlock mode XD

Seeing the FNB guys fumbling with their app to pay quickly was always so cute  Always 5 steps and 5 minutes later. This was mostly when they still didn't support Apple Pay.

When you ask them why they don't use Apple Pay or Google Pay you are always met with some blank NPC stare and a stumble of words about how they heard from some distant relative how "insecure" Google Pay is.
You obviously weren't around when it happened. There was no Google Pay, Apple Pay or Samsung Pay in SA at the time. Using the FNB app was the only way to do tap-pay in SA. No other bank supported it.
I used it for at least a year before Samsung Pay finally launched here.
By which stage, what was the point? I just continued to use the FNB app and it worked great.

I understand why they're finally stopping tho - why bother when other companies can manage that part of things.

(P.S. The app couldn't do tap-pay on Apple phones cos Apple didn't let 3rd parties access their NFC - there was no API. Not sure if this is still the case - nothing to do with "NPC stares")

People use android? - well done FNB.
Yep, that's why we had tap to pay from our phones like 4 years before you Apple people (in SA).

Edit: LOL Just fact checked myself - Apple Pay launched in SA in 2021. So actually, 5 years I was tapping while you guys were looking at me in the shops and restaurants going "What is that magic?" (Really happened).
