Hi Guys,

thought Id post this to get an idea if anybody else got this kind of thing happening to them.

yesterday at the petrol station, I go to pay with my FNB cheque card,
swipes, says "declined" shocked try at an FNB ATM nearby , says account frozen, sorry unable to help you.

manage to make a plan with my credit card to pay for the petrol,

as I wasn't far away from work, call FNB say we froze your account till we receive FICA documents:confused:

give me an email address to send the documents though, send them through, wait more than 30 min on HOLD until they unblock my account.

what bothers me is no notice, warning or notification on SMS at all, just unexpectedly freeze and disables my account.

anybody here had something similar happen to them? or is this a normal thing that happens sometimes?
or is it bad luck that it happened to me?

Geez..Never happened to me but they were very anal regarding my FICA documents when I opened my account.

Sounds like a BS story from the Bank
If your Fica was never done your account should have been frozen a long time ago and also if you opend it after the Fica was implemented how did they open an account without the Docs.

And I am assuming your Credit card is with FNB as well so if Fica docs would aslo be missing from that account?

Happened with me with SBSA (3 times in a row a few years ago) despite having been FICAed. You were lucky to get access after such short period of time. In my case I was on holiday overseas when I got hit the 2nd time over a weekend and had no access to cash or could make payments between Friday night and Monday.

I would have thought that now customers should have all been FICAed.

Standard Bank pulled that trick once... closed my accounts...
Me too. A few years ago. I was fully-bloody-fica'd as well. I made such a fuss at them over the phone that they unblocked them immediately.
I was told they do this randomly every month. WTF?

my question, is should I take it further?
post on hello peter? why now? and yes I did give all my details when I initially got my account.

so is it just a random thing that happens every now and then to make people angry?

Happened to me 3 times with Nedbank..

3rd time, I closed my accounts and moved to FNB... who did a similar thing on opening the account... then they tried to get incredibly anal with me about the documents, I threw my toys out the cot and told them they can accept the versions i've given them or I'll close the account and move elsewhere since its a brand new account and it would be no effort for me to move. Amazingly the documents I had provided instantly became acceptable.

Same thing happened to me a few months back. After being on the phone with FNB (but this took 2 hours) they found the FICA docs and opened my account again. I then went and opened a Capitec account and make sure I have money in there.

Feedback from FNB was they will discipline the "idiot" who forgot to tick the box. Ja sure.

Then for the business I had a visit from a FNB senior manager who was only interested if I knew my relationship manager. He couldn't explain why I was charged a R4.10 history fee didn't leave a card but this was the first visit in ten years.

We have just become stats for the money making sausage machine called FNB.

So now you also need a back up bank go figure.

I wonder if the FNB social team would reply to this thread I doubt it!
:(

You sure that you never received an email / SMS to resubmit your FICA documentation? Banks are required to update this every few years. I had to do this with FNB three months after I had opened my account, and they even sent a courier to collect the documentation from my workplace...

I would check that the contact details they have on file, match your current contact details.

I've had my debit card summarily cancelled with no notification at all from Nedbank.... just because they decided that the type of card I had was no longer in use, so they just cancelled everyones card without telling them... made me look like a right royal idiot when trying to pay with it.

unbelievable, so this is completely normal for them?

Ive been with FNB for the odd 8+ years never even thought about switching banks
but if this "random" things happen again, I will take my business elsewhere..

no I've never swapped phone number or any other details, just randomly completely out of the blue from nowhere it seems.
and in the worst spot possible.

are they required to actually reverify my details every one in a while? or is it due to them making a mistake?

Probably this. All the banks are really bad at this.

Yeah, I had my own gripes with Nedbank... was a pain to close my account with them in the end.
