I signed up for a new cheque account over the phone recently. Quickest process ever - within 10 minutes I was signed up for a new cheque account, 32 day notice account and foreign currency account. Right there is where their efficiency ends. Abruptly.

Couriers delivered the card and took a copy of my ID document and proof of residence with them (a clear colour copy). I was told the card would be active 48 hours later. I got an email from the bank requesting a copy of my ID document and proof of residence, which I emailed back.

A week later the card wasn't active, I called the call center and they asked me to go into the branch with a copy of my ID and my proof of residence, which I did at the end of last week. I might add that the whole in-bank process took over 3 hours to resolve.

Today I get a call from the courier company requesting a copy of my ID as the copy they have is unclear. They say they need to give it to the bank.

What the heck is happening with all these copies of my ID? Is the bank losing them? Do I need to be concerned that I'm sending out multiple copies to different people? The account is FICA'd and I have an active card, why is the courier company insisting they still need it? Who has the copy I sent with them?

The sign up process seems to be the worst experience. I learned from my experience when moving over from Standard Bank, that I should have just gone to a branch to open up accounts - it would have been quicker. I bitched a lot in this thread I created when signing up yonks ago.

Fortunately after that mess, I am a lot happier, and still with them.

Should have just gone into the bank and done it. I applied at the bank, took about 30 minutes. Got a call 2 days later to come fetch my cards. In and out in 2 minutes. Not a day's problem since then.

My wife tried to open a savings account at FNB after applying for one online, she still had to go into the branch and after waiting over an hour for a consultant they said the fingerprint scanner could not pick up her thumbprint in order to verify her identity with home affairs, and said she must go back to home affairs to rescan her thumbprint.......so she walked out of fnb and straight into absa to a consultant and opened a new savings account within 15 minutes,no finger print scanning was required.

Same here. Online experience not good. Ended up going to a branch. Very happy since then.

Had a similar experience years ago when I opened my FNB accounts.

Online process was great, but after receiving all the cards it just went to hell in a hand basket. To the point that I went into the branch and then started getting push back because I didn't have original copies of Proof of Residence and Payslips and such since I get all that stuff electronically. Just told the bank manager that I was beyond pissed off at that point and they either accept the documents I have or I close the accounts and keep using Nedbank. Amazingly all the documents instantly became totally acceptable.

What I will give them is that they got back to me on this just a minute ago. I complained online at the same time as posting this and they phoned at 5pm and will follow up tomorrow. In hindsight I agree that going to a branch is the answer, not that it's a quick process - they now have a ticket system, but no clear indication of where to go when you walk in (branch is at Vincent Park). The ticket machine is to the right as you walk in, waiting area is straight ahead - that needs to change. It's fine now I know the system, but just poor design. As for couriers handling the card and your ID stuff - never again for me. I can't see why I should trust a third party.
