FNB switches 12 000 desktops to Linux

Yeah these would be the same brain donors who updated their fantastic internet banking site to to something more like a dogs breakfast.

They used to have the best IT infrastructure and obviously the new guy is on a mission to destroy that...

Lets see how quick the lady in the bank is going to be now..

I am assuming they are replacing their old OS/2 desktops with Linux ... which should actually up productivity. Only a couple of machines in the branches run WinXP ... mostly the managers and what not. On operations level it was always OS/2 ... AFAIK from dealing with them 2 years ago
 
It's good for OSS (more people get to use a superior operating system), good for South Africa (more money stays in the country - except Micro$oft has some finger in the Novell pie) , good news all round...And they will be guaranteed better desktop security.....
 
Dell chooses Ubuntu while FNB chooses Novell Linux. Is FNB being unproudly South African...

Yep, they're scared of Microsoft, and are paying 'protection money' to Novell.

I think SLED is a nice boring corporate type of desktop, whereas Ubuntu is too sexy. Companies are afraid of employees enjoying their desktop experience....In fact, they are scared of employees enjoying themselves generally. Must have a grey desktop...no colours please, this is a corporation!
 
Novell = Microsoft Linux, probably still pops up the little paperclip to tell you where the start button is :-)
 
The 'feature' of Office 2000 was that the stupid paper clip of '97 was gone. I haven't missed him.

Novell=corporate bs, but still, having Linux under the hood is good....

For this type of application I don't think that applies (although we could debate if it applies at all really). These desktops would probably completely locked down and running only the apps they need.
 
From what I have seen as this is purely peeking over the desk as the lady was editing some info on my account they were using good old Client Access. Which means that more than likely theres an Iseries(as400 / i5) or whatever its called nowadays running at the back. For this kind of application there is other oss alternatives which works on linux. I migbt be 100% wrong about the iseries as I am not sure to what other platforms Client access can connect to.
 
FNB uses IBM S/390 mainframes, not iSeries.

Odds are excellent that they are simply running a 3270 terminal emulator on top of Linux now, instead of a TE on top of OS/2. Not that big a change, all in all.

Of course, the teller's machines that interact with things like the PIN pads, and cheque readers might be a different story . . . We'll see.

Then why does my Office 2000 install disk by default have "Office Assistant" enabled? I have to go custom install everytime and untick it...
