FNB Virtual Card customers report transaction notification failure

Several FNB customers have reported not receiving notifications for transactions on their virtual cards between 31 May and 4 June 2025.

MyBroadband first noticed feedback about people not receiving in-app or emailed "InContact" notifications for virtual card transactions last week.

Not just Virtual Card transactions.
Up to 8hours delay for login notifications, EFT payments, inter account transfers, etc.
Image getting a login notification at 3am because you did a payment at 4pm the day before.

I did one the other day and it didn't work. I thought it was my limit, but it was all good. The normal card worked though. This was about 2 weeks ago.

Yep... I've been seeing it for a while where I do a transaction with a virtual card and it doesn't notify me via mail or sms... it also never shows up in the app or the web app. It DOES however show up in the statement later... I thought I'd found an infinite money glitch but was sadly disappointed.

Another issue I've experienced is duplicate transactions being shown on the web app.
I spoke to an agent and they were like "um.... it's not affecting your balance though".
But who ACTUALLY knows. I would have to go through everything with a fine-toothed comb... I only put enough money in my account to pay what needs paying... so there's that. lol

You guys better check whether you won something at the National Lottery, who knows, the bank might not be InContact.

Does FNB still do mail and SMS, other than proof of payment and statements? As far as I remember, every notification I receive is in-app.

Sounds like a blessing. All their in app messages are just spam.

I had 3 transactions go through fraudulently to onecart.co.za last week, without any visa secure popup and caught it on the 4th attempted one that popped up visa secure. Blocked the card immediately now waiting for a new one.

SMS no, but emails I still receive about 99% of the time. A few emails and inContact messsages in-App missing around the time that the OP referred to.

I still get SMS and email notifications... albeit it quite delayed.

Wife ordered from checkers Sixty60 today... got the SMS at 09:11 and the email 09:17.

I thought they were switching over to app notifications only...

I also still get SMS notifications when I do transfers and EFTs.

I also get notification of payments/deposits.

The lack of notifications is concerning, as it could result in a customer losing a lot or all of their money if their card details had been compromised without their knowledge.

You have far bigger things to worry about if someone has managed to gain access to your Virtual Card numbers as well as the ever-changing CVV.

I get in-app and e-mail 'in contact' notifications, but if the in-app one is delayed then the e-mail will also be delayed. Still have to go check on a regular basis.

And I was commenting on the physical card being a reality for a while to come just yesterday. Must add that even with using a physical card, the notifications are sometimes delayed by anything up to 24 hours on a fairly regular enough basis for me to be aware of it.

Nice to see COO Gareth Rimmington doing his job like a champion - I get dozens of messages when opening my app telling me to make more debt but not a one was warning me to check my transactions because of a problem with notifications. No doubt, the man will get a massive bonus and increase this year because he is such a valuable employee!

FNB and security are like water and oil.

I complained about other security flaws they have. Hiding your other accounts on the app yet having access to them via the USSD menu. Defeats the purpose.

Also, I have hidden my credit card on the app but it is visible when using their ATM.

The point of it all is to not have access until I "unhide" the accounts.

The one plus, unfortunately it gets canceled by their poor security measures, is that they added another layer of security where you hide your account and the only way to access them is to go to the bank physically to "unhide" them. That is good, only if they tidied up the whole security measures in place.

@Jan how about Nedbank who, by default, have transaction notifications disabled for all virtual credit cards after they're created in the app, with no option in the app to enable notifications for VCs, forcing customers to call into the call centre to enable the VC notifications after they happen to realise that they aren't getting notifications for any virtual card transactions?

(and wash, rinse, repeat every time they create a new VC because the enable notification setting is done on a per-card basis)

Feels like that's worth a request for comment.

I had an issue not long ago with Standard Bank where the authorisation for payment would time out every time. Lasted for a whole 2 months and the bank couldn't explain what the issue was. Sorted itself out somehow this month.

@Jan Thanks for the news item. I will try to identify the cause of this issue based on the fact that this issue presents.
(a) The customer is using a Android phone on Mobile data or is connected to a WiFi router with backbone of Mobile data.
(b) Using Google Wallet app linked to the Virtual Card.

Jan, you are reminded of a past issues of All mobile networks shut their access to Google RCS servers in this year when using Mobile Data. It is suggested that similar actions are happening from Mobile Networks as root cause of this issue.
Just worthwhile looking into.
