Hi all,

is anyone else having issues with their FNB Virtual Cards linked to credit card?

My DOs are failing due to some CVV error, which should not feature as an issue. Also, when using the live CVV for purchases, the same error occurs.

One advantage of using virtual cards for recurring payments is that you don't get charged. I had my Packt subscription on my Virtual Card and never once did the money go off and my sub stayed active - they never picked up the missed debits.

They will find you and make you pay.

My Windscribe and Google subs went off without a hitch on 2 different virtual cards.

I also bought from PSN with one. I've only ever added the CVV once when I initially added the cards. I only need the new updated one for shopping on TaL etc.

Do people use virtual cards because of one or more of the following reasons
  • Perception of security
  • Gives more control e.g. allocating a set amount per merchant
  • Commiting fraud against rental or subscription services

  • Ebucks rules most likely
OP I saw FNB sent some message apologizing for issues with the virtual cards, might be related.

CVV changes every hour, so someone having the CVV doesn't get them anywhere. Card can be "destroyed" at any time without having to be issued with a new physical card, and because the number changes if recreated, it can put a stop to unauthorised payments.

Dynamic CVV adds a layer of security if you use the card with multiple merchants (which consumers will do because they already did that with passwords).

Personally I’d have gone the other way.. ie only display card details as one off.. if you need it again recreate but I guess that’s a 19 + 3 digit annoyance vs 3 digit and the market/acquirers just aren’t ready for ecom sub so least annoyance won.

Keeping the cvv the same carries the same risk as a physical card so no benefit to the bank tbh.

Thanks, I work in card payment processing so its useful to hear why people think VC are useful. Part of the reason seems to be the belief that merchants hold the card details or have access to card details - this is extreme unlikely as this process is handled by a PCI-DSS compliant payment processor. Personally I don't see any benefit in using them as it only prevents the mechanism behind a tiny percentage of CC fraud
