SARS really likes to make life difficult for small business.

For years I had more output VAT as input VAT, so SARS was happy. I had to do a big import last month relative to my company, probably small fry compared to other companies anyway.

So this time I could claim back some VAT, which would help with my cashflow as this import drained quite a bit.

Of course i was expecting SARS to ask me for docs, as they usually do when I import. Send them all the docs, all import documentation as provided by fedex proof of payment from my bank, advanced payment notification etc. and real invoice from the supplier not a made up one.

All the **** SARS should be able to cross reference against my importers code anyway (They brag that they use AI, so should be a no brainer to use on their own data), payments match invoice, fedex cleared everything with the right documentation etc.

The only thing fedex messed up looks like the tax invoice is not complying to

Provide tax invoice from supplier FedEx Express South Africa (PTY) Ltd that meets the requirements of section 20 of the VAT Act

Checked the invoice from FedEx, realized they never added my VAT number, although it was supplied to them. So yea Fnck FEDEX as well.

Now besides getting a correct invoice from FEDEX They want a lot more info.

Sars info from their letter

However, the relevant material submitted does not mitigate the risk(s) detected.

We are talking about R10 000.00 here, a couple of years ago I had them harassing me for R11.00 they owed me. To be honest if I am going to defraud SARS I will do it properly not for R10 000.00

Go after the crooks/taxi bosses/politicians

Sometimes I think it is not worth my while to continue this business and just close it down, making a person unemployed and derive sars of future income.

As it is the business is not my main income, actually I don't even pay myself as it started because of an hobby. All the profits get reinvested and maybe when I retire I will start drawing money or sell the business.

The ways SARS is threatening and treating small business is going to cost them in the end. I am ready to throw in the towel and retrench my employee. It won't be a loss to me. Actually I might have less stress.

I wonder how companies can get refunds of VAT in the millions.

If I had a business I that I didn't need to survive and I get any kind of grief from any government department, if tell them get fkd and shut down.

And the kak thing is I don't even do enough turnover to be registered for VAT, was advised to get registered for VAT as I was doing imports. Worst advise ever, actually wonder why SARS allowed me to get registered in the first place

eish. Maybe cause fedex f'ed up they require stricter docs now ?

but dont throw in the towel. You never know where it will lead and that employee needs employment

I won't yet at least not for the next 2 years as I just signed a lease for 2 years on new premises. Which added to my VAT refund as well as I had to cover 2 overlapping leases for 2 months.

IMHO VAT refunds are a trigger for SARS to be difficult, mostly immediately doing an audit. My little company had a mix up caused by SARS with VAT numbers so we were advised to get a refund from one number and pay the refund into the other. Lo and behold the request triggered an audit which luckily, as we were small, had had an old dragon in charge of admin, we passed easily.

Subsequently we were advised by our accountants (a big firm) to generate an invoice that was never sent or delayed etc just to ensure you always paid some VAT. We have had to do it a few times but, touch wood, no audits since.

Parasites.

It’s unfortunately a situation many small businesses run into. VAT refunds often trigger additional verification with South African Revenue Service, even when all the documentation is legitimate. It can be incredibly frustrating, especially when it impacts cash flow.

We at Company Partners work with many businesses through exactly these types of compliance and verification issues, and you’re definitely not alone in experiencing this.

Wishing you patience through the process — small businesses already carry enough on their shoulders.

Yeah it is absolutely kak, it sounds like a simple thing though, but it is so important to make sure that every invoice you claim are correct. It may seem like a silly thing but you will save yourself a few headaches!
