Looking for some foam pipe insulation in Cape Town. (I did some googling and only found in JHB)
Its gotta be about 20mm-30mm external diameter. (ideal about 27mm)
It MUST be foam, durable, squishy, not too hard/soft. (not fibreglass)
I think "polyurethane pipe insulation" fits this description.

(I couldn't find a better place on the forum to post this, I reckon you guys would be most likely to know)
Basically a friend and I are gonna be training stick fighting. Bamboo sticks are too hard, PVC pipe shatters and can be very sharp and pierce skin, so I'm thinking foam pipe insulation with thin metal rods inside, then some kind of roam/rubber tip.

Pipe insulation would probably hold up better than thin foam rubber sheet wrapped around a metal rod a few times. (which would require taping with insulation tape etc, and all the glue from the tape would ooze out and be sticky and gross)

-----------------------------------------------
While I'm asking, also looking for some welded wire mesh with a small apeture. (gonna mod some cheap motorcycle helmets) (mesh in place of visor, which would mist up and get scratched etc)

Want to train this, with less brutality :)

Hi Lope

I noticed that you have not been answered on this. Did you manage to get what you need?

Reco (Afrox) does foam pipe insulation (for the purpose of reducing heat loss / energy transferral)

We have bought various thicknesses and diameters in the past. Not sure how well it'd work for protection against being beaten with a rod, but worth a look. They have a branch in CT. We are an end-user so selling to you shouldn't be a problem.

Nice bro, thanks for the heads up. The 'project' has been on hold. (Been out of MA for 2 months due to work/time/life changes). Will add this to my to-do list.

Hi Cube,
Do you have the contact details fro the branch in Cape Town?
Would this product work to insulate hot water piping, want to use it with a geyser blanket?
Regarsd

Most Aircon places use insulation for their copper pipes .they then use cable ties to make sure they are nice and tight around the pipe.

mybee that can help ?

Anyone got any prices for this stuff.

There's been quite a few conversations recently about geyser efficiency etc. so I'm sure there would be lots of interest. Just need to know prices to see if it stacks up!

Use a pool noodle. I can guarantee you it would be cheaper than using insulation.

Available from most hardware stores, such a Builders, or plumbing shops. The foam insulation is custom made for the job and comes in sizes suited to the pipe diameters your are trying to insulate, and have a "zipper mechanism" to complete the seal. The slightest "leak" in the insulation can compromise the attempt to limit heat loss. So yes you can try using a pool noodle, which you will have to split, and then tape up somehow or seal properly.

Just do the job properly with the correct material.

.
Pool noodle, duct tape and zipties

Read the "Job Description".

I don't think they will be hitting each other hard or fast enough for heat loss to be a relevant factor :)
