Focus and Meter separately ?

... for example when taking a silhouette surely you'd want seperate ?
 
On Canon DSLRs, you can set the exposure lock button on the back to act as your focusing button instead, where your shutter button now only locks exposure and takes the actual photo.
Combine the two and you can focus on what you need to, then meter what you need to, lock your metering, fix your composition and take the photo.
