Right so I am in Florida on holiday and my 50mm f1.4 has started playing up. I am really battling to get it to focus correctly, it will not focus on anything within a space of about 1.5m and I am even struggling with manual focus... Does it sound like it is done for?

I was having focusing issues after last weekend with my 1.4. Took it in and it was sand clogging things up.

My family bitches but when we go to the beach, I could not care what the circumstances are, my dslr stays at home. Period. The beach is for cellphone cameras and MnD compacts. The above is the reason why...

I was being a touch overdramatic, I'll have to admit  Since I got my 7D all my lenses are out - problem with the 7D I guess, I still need to do some calibration tests.

That said, the focus motor is one of the 50mm f/1.8 II's compromises - it has never failed me but it's noisy and slow-ish (compared to the awesomness of the ring USM in my L lenses), and I guess with the pretty thin DOF of this lens, it's shows up a lot worse than the other lenses.

If I did not take my DSLR to the beach (or other dusty places), I would not take any photos :)

I take better photos when my cameras are on me, not sitting at home. :) Ironically the lens was sitting in my pocket when it got

On the bright side if this happens a few more times I might be able to justify the weather sealed 50mm f/1.2 :)
