you with your fog lights on

can someone please enlighten me as to why people drive with their car fog lights on (on clear days and/or clear nights)

and if you do, do you drive with front on only or front and rear

and if with rear on, do you know that it blinds the person in the car behind you , or don't you know you can switch them off

I've got no problem with normal front fog lights, either at dawn/dusk or at night - they do give you better lighting to the side and they're a non-issue for other road users. However, people driving with the rear fog lights on on anything but fog and torrential rain, should be shot on sight.

From a subjective observation based purely on the appearance of these people, I would hazard that switches confuse them.

......some cars turn both sets on, hence why some people drive with the rear set on.

I've never been in a car where the facility isn't there to turn the front on individually, and I've been a few cars in my life. Normally you can't have the rear on without also switching on the front, though.

they would have 2 seperate switches for this, as i've never been in a car that had both sets of lights, but only 1 switch

agreed, it irritates me beyond repair

They have them on for one of two reasons :

1. They are idiots that think they are so cool cos their car has fog lights so they feel the need to show this off at all times.
2. They are idiots who don't know how to use their car properly and are not even aware of what those lights on the dash are indicating.

Steve0, by law you are required to have separate switches for your fog lights. I drive with my front ones on 90% of the time (leadsa) the rear ones never come on unless there is some heavy rains or thick fog. I also lose my cool when some idiot drives with the rear ones on at 5:30 in the morning... That **** blinds you dude!

Do you mean to tell me people drive with them on, even if there is no Fogindurban?

They are an issue!!

Feel free to do an online search to find the numerous images I have seen before showing the visual effect of fog lights on a car approaching you!

Lead SA does not require you to drive with your fog lights on! You refer to the idiot with the rear ones on.... ironic that.

NO THEY AREN'T!!!111!!11!!

In nearly 2 decades on the roads I have never had an experience where normal, OEM front fog lights have influenced me in the slightest. We're not talking East Rand bakkies with Harvard landing lights on the bullbar here. FFS man, do you absolutely always have to be such an argumentative git?

Did you do that search? Nope, I didn't think so. Well let me spoon feed you then and do the search for you... give me a little while

You might also want to ensure you keep your finger on the shift button properly next time...

I gotta say, occassionalyl the front ones annoy me..the back ones are almost always annoying

I will find the images later but here is some text to keep you amused for now :

Front fog lights should only be used where visibility is seriously reduced and should be adjusted so as not to cause undue dazzle or discomfort to other road users. The inappropriate use is dangerous as it can affect the oncoming driver's ability to see cyclists, pedestrians, and also the road.

Then of course we are totally ignore the legality, or not, of doing so!

(6) No person shall operate on a public road, a motor vehicle while any fog lamp fitted to such vehicle is lit, except in conditions of poor visibility caused by snow, fog, mist, dust or smoke.

Oh... and yes, I do feel the need to turn everything into an argument when someone says something idiotic! Which seems to happen fairly often on here!

Oh for Pete's sake, Lance. No search is necessary as again you can find anything on the web to support just about any assertion. How's about, just for a change of pace for you, we try logic instead?

A fog light casts its light in such a fashion so that, in foggy conditions, it:
  1. casts a beam from as close to ground level as possible, where the fog is least dense, and
  2. does not cast any light upwards, where it would illuminate the fog in front of the driver & blind him anyway.

Why do you think it works better to switch your main beams off and have only the fog lights on in very heavy mist/fog? Unless you're a hedgehog, you'll suffer no undue discomfort from properly adjusted fog lights.

Well, his search actually revealed the law as it stands...thats pretty relevant?

I just let the dick go past me and then drive behind him with my brights on...see if he likes it.
