1. Is there a way to get to characters in the font, such as with windows alt-#, where # is the ascii code for the character, typed on the numeric keypad.
2. What software do you guys favour to see what characters are available in a font?

In Windows use character map:

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Character map

find it and copy it from there or use the same functionality from Word.

NVM: only saw after making the post that it is in the Linux section. GL then

Unfortunately there is no keyboard shortcuts like in Windows, a problem for Afrikaans.

You'll have to use a character map like suggested, KDE = KCharSelect.
European Alphabet = Latin-1 supplement

Thanks for responses!

Bit of a pain having to copy whatever character you want from the character map. Looks like a good project to get my hands dirty with the nitty-gritty of X.

Looks like this may help. I'll spend a bit of time trying to figure out what it's about and let you all know.
