1. Is there a way to get to characters in the font, such as with windows alt-#, where # is the ascii code for the character, typed on the numeric keypad.
2. What software do you guys favour to see what characters are available in a font?

In Windows use character map:

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Character map

find it and copy it from there or use the same functionality from Word.

Gnome has Gucharmap, very similar to Windows version....

Unfortunately there is no keyboard shortcuts like in Windows, a problem for Afrikaans.

You'll have to use a character map like suggested, KDE = KCharSelect.

Bit of a pain having to copy whatever character you want from the character map. Looks like a good project to get my hands dirty with the nitty-gritty of X.

The compose key is great! Much better that Alt+#. I mean, Compose ^ e makes a lot more sense than Alt+136 (or whatever the ASCII code is).
