Anyone seen this campaign?

One of the things they ask of people, is to go to their local police station and declare that they do not buy stolen goods.

If I know I do not buy stolen goods, why do I need to tell the police that???????? By that analogy, I should go the station on a daily basis and let them know of all the crimes I did not - and will not - commit.

That is just idiotic. I know I am not a criminal. I do NOT feel the need to assure SAPS of that.

I think you might have missed the point. It was simply members commiting themselves to not doing or tolerating crime.

On 5 July 2008, thousands of forgood members across South Africa made a commitment, jointly with local police officers, to not do crime, tolerate crime done by others and to report criminals.

I have had them in my sig for a while now, IMO a great initiative.

EDIT: Here is some info on the point of the day's activities: http://www.forgood.co.za/monthly_action/Pages/July5th.aspx

So if I don't go and declare innocence, am I guilty of something?

The cops down at my local station are going to want to know if I want a noddy badge or something if I go down there and tell them I'm not doing crime. Somehow I think they have better things to do than have a chit-chat with law-abiding citizens

No, I get the point they tried to make.

My Q is if I know I am not a criminal, why should I tell SAPS that? Waste of time. Would it not be better if I had an internal dialogue and resolved never to do crime?

The point of the social network as I see it, is to get to know all the role players involved. Yeah the whole going there to proclaim that YOU don't do crime might be just symbolic.

Part of the bigger picture is getting involved in CPF, and other stuff. Not everyone's cup of tea, obviously. But comendable none the less.

Why don't all the criminals go to the police station and declare they are crooks.
Then the cops can lock them up for good.

What do you do with the situation where I live, where the police just don't care. You can report a crime till you're blue in the face. They won't come out unless someone has been killed.

Have you chased up your complaint about their service, or rather lack thereof, to the highest levels in the station? If no joy there, the next level?

If you don't complain, and try and get some action out of them, who else will? Just a thought. ;)

You phone them and say:
"Listen, I've just shot some thieves in my garden full of holes and I want to lay trespassing and malicious damage to property charges ... the b@stards are bleeding all over the begonias"
;)

I think people are down at heart because even the National Comissioner of Police is less than squeaky clean. You do not get a policeman higher than that, so where do we go from there?

Do like Zille, kick, scream and shout until someone listens?

Well seeing as though SAPS can't do anything about criminals, they are hoping that all innocent parties step forward, and by process of elimination, they can arrest everyone else.
Better get there quick!
