Force iPhone / iPad to only connect on 3G

Is there a way, without jail-breaking the device, to force the iDevice to only connect using 3G ?

I think he means to force it on 3G, not EDGE / GPRS. As far as I know only when Jailbroken.

I can understand. Where I am I get 1 bar 3G but it works fine. Edge I get 4 bars. So my phone picks edge which is slow.

Plus the phone keeps trying to find a better 3G signal using up the battery.
