Does anyone know of the relevant settings I can put into the host file for accessing Windows Live
(https://login.live-int.com/) via a Local ISP login ?

My main interest is access to their WinLive's SkyDrive service (windowslive.com/online/skydrive) - which involves being able to upload up to 25GB of free, online storage of docs. (in my case).

Would appreciate it if any of you, such as Pada (who started the Google/Gmail equivalent thread), can help.

I already use Gmail Docs., but they 'only' allow for about 1 Gig of docs. to be uploaded per account, and I've got a whole lot of old docs. I want to scan & save somewhere, preferably in one place -

(This part of the post, I know, should be in PC Hardware, but to compare it to using Cloud Computing for Doc. storage) would a portable HDD be a better option, and if so, which one(s) to consider that will last for up to 10 years ?

Also, will USB be a thing of the past in a few years, so connecting an old (by then) portable HDD to a new(er) computer might prove problematic ?

the main issue with any online storage solution is speed of access to files, replicating with the repo and moving your data if you change cloud storage providers.
if you're just dumping stuff there and leaving it, without needing to make too many changes, an online storage solution should be fine.
skydrive has a couple of third-party connectors which map it as a network drive in explorer - that'll make it a lot easier to manage your files locally without the web interface.
there's also a whole lot of other cloud storage providers which offer good paid solutions for larger storage requirements.
if you need to access large files frequently, or do a full restore quickly, cloud storage it's not going to be optimal (unless you're sitting on a very fast connection with uncapped).

i don't see usb or usb legacy support being phased out anytime soon. if you're paranoid, you can just by an hdd with an enclosure and upgrade the enclosure if necessary to support the latest serial interface.
google, fb, youtube all have local cdn's which afaik skydrive doesn't have. so i can't see how you can access skydrive via local if there's no local server for it.

murraybiscuit, thanks for your reply earlier today :

Most of what I'll be storing I never anticipate having to look at again, but just in case, I'd like somewhere to save it - I downloaded GLADINET CLOUD EXPLORER / DESKTOP earlier on, and so far am satisfied with what it achieves in conjunction with either Gmail Docs. or SkyDrive - might post some queries within the forum, so if anyone's used it before & therefore familiar with it, pls advise.

I'd only be keen on buying a HDD if 90% of my docs. needed to be accessed each week, but it's more like 10% or less being looked at once a year, if that.

Re ''i can't see how you can access skydrive via local'', seeing as Skydrive is a Microsoft product, and they've had a presence in SA for years, wouldn't they (by now) have local servers ?

Bump

Would also like to know, signed up for Skydrive today and installed that Gladinet program... just need to get uncapped and set it to start the backup :D
