I want to buy oil for my 2014 Ford Figo 1.4 petrol. The manual says it uses 10W 30, but I can't seem to find it in the shops. So which would be the better alternative, 5W 30 or 10W 40?

Takealot has a 50% discount on this 5L 5w30.

5W30 should be fine, a little thinner at 0 Deg C but the right viscosity at 100 Deg C. Just check to see if you need any oil with specific certifications. I use Shell oil in all my cars, have been from years, Goldwagen stocks most viscosities and greades.

Are there no alternatives in the manual?

No, manual doesn't list alternatives
Check this thread perhaps you'll find an answer, according to a Figo owner the 5W30 is the recommended for his 2012 model, I doubt too much changed between 2012 and 2014.

You might also just want to check with the Ford agents what the price of oil is for your car. You might find that that the prices don't differ much. When I serviced my car recently, I was quoted R93/l (x5) for 5W30 from Barons and Goldwagen quoted me R495 for a 5l bottle of the same brand oil.

I'll get a quote from my local Ford dealer

Thanks for this. I think I'll go with the 5w 30

Hi my 2014 had a oil change service about 6-8 months ago, but I notice the oil level is already quite low. Been doing more mileage over the last couple of months though.

Was the 5w 30 ok?

No. Just oil being consumed.
No issues at all with car.
Could be burning an imperceptible small amount through the rings or valve.

Have someone drive behind you at night. Should be able to detect oil burning blue smoke, if that's the case.

But if you serviced 6-8 months ago and you're already noticing the level is low, something is wrong.

It shouldn't "consume" that much, if any ?

Sorry guys, I had petrol station assistant check it earlier and probably wasn't looking that closely.

I've now been home an hour and went out to check out level again myself.
Looks fine
Whew got a bit of a fright there initially, could see $$ signs leaving my account !
