Hi

I am now thinking of a ford ranger 2.5 turbo diesel double cab
about 2004,hopefully 2005.

Befor I seriously start looking, do any of you have one, or come accross one,and did it come to your notice whether they have any inherent
design issues, like a poor gearbox or diff.

I saw a review that stated that it gave good fuel economy.

Thanx/Pete

I recently bought a 2005 Ranger Supercab 2.5 TD.
I spent ages researching and test driving all sorts of 'big' bakkies before I made my decision, and I am very happy with it.
If the bakkie has been looked after properly and you keep that up, then it will go forever.
They have the best fuel consumption in their class but are still heavier than most cars.
If you put your foot down and rev the hell out of it, it will suck juice like there's no tomorrow. My average has been 11l/100kms. When towing my bike-trailer fully loaded on the N2 @ 140km/h for about 100kms in both directions, I was getting about 12l/100kms.
I have heard that they can give diff problems, but you should get a mechanic-friend or the AA to check out the vehicle anyway before parting with your hard-earned cash, and they should pick up that familiar whine... (Spend a little now so you don't spend a lot later!)
Other than that they are good strong engines, but definitely not robot-to-robot racers.

Enjoy you search and your new bakkie!
Cheers

I did 100 000km in a Mazda Drifter 2.5 td. Had issues with the clutch and the front diff which seized. Besides that it was fine.

+1 if you find a Ranger that has been looked after and you look after it yourself it will last you very long. If, on the other hand you drive like my brother the turbo or engine will prolly blow before you put 35k's on it lol. I've got the 2009 3.0 Supercab though and it is a lovely vehicle :D

I called a diesel garage asking for advise on any tech issues for this ranger, and he said he liked it,and although he had heard of diff and gearbox isues on some it was his opinion that was from abuse.
He had not seen those faults in his garage.
Then he also said that the mazda drifter was good.
I believe that some mazda drifters have the same motor in as the ford ranger.
Does the mazda drifters also have similar fuel economy to the ford ranger?
