AFAIK, you may buy foreign currency at the earliest 60 days before departure abroad.

Because the Rand is so strong, I would love to buy foreign currency now, but I am outside the 60 day period.

In your traveling experience, is the rule applied very strictly in SA?

Thanks

I do have the plane ticket .... and yes, it is a requirement, along with a valid passport.

I was actaully asking about the period for buying the currency though.

I would take a chance and go to Bidvest bank and see if they sell it to you.

Just remember that the sell rate is usually a bit higher than the buy rate... so expect the other currency to cost you about 20 c more.

If you bank with FNB you can view current selling rates for various currencies on the website as well as order notes and TCs.

how far are you from 60 days?

which currency pair are you buying?

using your ATM card on FNB should cost you (meaning me), R27.5 per 1000 rand withdrawn overseas, i think this beast buying notes, but i could also be on crack rock

Call me paranoid but I prefer to leave with a reasonable amount of cash in hand. If I get to the destination and the ATM card does not work, I am in trouble!

If its dollars you want, you could always just tell them that you are driving to Botswana to visit family... And therefore don't have a plane ticket. :D
