YALLABAI, sunana dan doka Chukwu. Zan so inga takardun motanka? This is Hausa - one of Nigeria's languages - for Hello Sir, my name is Officer Chukwu. May I please see your driver's licence?

That is how some of the Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers might talk to you in the near future when they stop you at a roadblock.

That is if Joburg mayor Parks Tau implements a tip he got from his New York counterpart, Michael Bloomberg, to recruit foreigners into the city's police department.

Sunday World sources saidTau wanted to adopt some of the tactics used by the New York Police Department (NYPD), which involve deploying a multinational force to ensure policing in the city is not compromised by language barriers.

"Johannesburg is unique in that it has many nationals who speak different languages," said one source.

"The plan is to recruit foreign nationals and utilise them in gathering crime intelligence and visible policing."

JMPD spokesman Wayne Minnaar said the recruitment policy of the department does not discriminate based on nationality.

"To qualify, you need to have a matric, a driver's licence and be physically fit. Applicants should also be between the ages of 18 and 35."

Minnaar could not say if there are any foreigners enlisted on the department's payroll.

According to another Joburg councillor close to Tau, the two mayors exchanged tips when Tau visited the US in August 2011.

Bloomberg, who ended three consecutive terms as mayor of New York City in 2013, is credited with bringing down crime levels in the Big Apple, by giving the NYPD unprecedented powers, including stop and frisk, considered a no-no by Americans who value civil liberties such as the right to own guns.

Tau and Bloomberg, who have forged a close relationship, will address an international mayors' summit on climate change in Johannesburg next week.

Sunday World sources said Bloomberg advised Tau on how to deal with crime hot spots turned no-go areas such as Fordsburg, Hillbrow, Berea and Yeoville - where language barriers may exist due to the large number of immigrants living in an area.

Won't that be useful.

Oh yay... so now they want to get foreigners to assist them to solicit a bribe from you and harass people in roadblocks... this is very clever.... that way if the motorist retaliates with legal means, he can't do much to the officer who is a foreign national.
