foreign vehicles on our roads

Am i the only one who has noticed the large number of foreign vehicles on our roads (i.e. from moz, ang, bots). And they aren't trucks, they're normal passenger vehicles. Are people importing cheap second hand cars from asia into moz and just driving over the boarder and using these cars? how does that work....i'm keen.

do you still get speeding fines?
 
You become a target for syndicates as one of our Botswana clients found out...
 
less chance of trackers according to the insurance company.
 
my mates from tanzania (exchange students)

they got 3 fines amongst them, its been 2 years and they never got the ticket sent home lol
 
It's worth it as long as you dont mind not being able to insure your vehicle in south africa...
 
I worked in Tanzania for 4 years & knew some SA guys who:

bought their cars off www.japanesevehicles.com
shipped the car to Dar es Salaam and registered it in Tanzania.
drove it down to SA + get a temporary import permit when entering the country.
bribed guys in SA to "make" the car legal + get a roadworthy.

In SA I've seen a lot of Mitsubishi 4x4 vans, Toyota Crowns and Toyota Hi-Ace 4x4 mini-bus's (none are actually sold in SA AFAIK).
These are all illegal imports.

In Tanz and Kenya the most popular Jap cars were Impreza's and Subaru wagons.

Add $$$? for fuel and border crossings (Tanzania to SA) plus another $$$? for bribes in SA and voilah.

Whilst I abhor corruption of any sort, at $2300 one would almost be tempted to buy one up north and bribe our virtuous officials here to make it (kinda)legal.

You will have to ask the government about why our cars cost as much as they do...:p

Just as an example, we supply paraplegics with cars, and they get them without having to pay import and sales taxes, and their cars cost R90 000 less!!!

As for the price of this one, it's about right for a 12 year old car, just that this one appears to be in fantastic condition!
 
R16k for a 12yo Forester. That seems a little on the cheap side to me (I'd think closer to R30k or so).

I've wandered through a few of those holding places in durbs where they keep the jap cars and it makes you feel sick when you see what they cost and how good a nick they're in. The mileage is genuine and you know those cars have to follow a hectic roadworthy/licensing process in japan.

I know, it's bloody frustrating that we cannot touch them. There are some fantastic cars that come in.:(
 
Sadly I have not seen any Vectras or Insignias - only the same old cars we have with different model names/numbers.
